POLICE STATE OF SKATE
Wartime! It's happening, and, yes, it's going to affect all of our
lives in ways we can't even imagine-for many years to come.
Forget inconveniences like increased security at airports and
higher gas and oil prices (drive less, skate more). Obviously,
there will be the wasteful toll of human lives and young minds.
Untold billions of dollars will be blown up in the deserts of the
Middle East while serious problems here on the home turf go
unchecked and get worse: homelessness, poverty, deterioration
of schools, inflation, higher taxes and a total disregard for the
environment. Add to that a critical drought situation in the west-
ern states. (If you think a war for oil can get nasty, wait until you
see guns for water!) "So how," you ask, "does this affect me, the
skater? We skate wherever we want. There are new parks and
ramps being built everywhere. Even the drought will mean more
empty pools and ditches." Parks have been known to come and
go; funds for public parks could get slashed a lot quicker than
they were found. You always have the street, where increased
police power and disregard for civil rights go hand in hand.
Remember skate harassment? Sorry to be so negative, but that's
just a short list of things for young people to think about these
days. Providing you don't get drafted, that is.

Kevin Thatcher
