TEN YEAR SMEAR
The ultra-suave 10-
grand plus Thrasher
decade party was a
social success. Tony
Hawk was honored to be
honored. Todd Hastings spewed
for 15 hours. Tate was D.J., Christ
raged. Thatcher hosted, Mo crutched,
Rector rectified, Guerrero command-
eered the penthouse and with
Thiebaud plotted the direction of their
new publishing empire. Jake and
Jak's Team reps Tom Scott and Pat
Black were first in,

fully stocked
bar. Brian

Beach environment. Team
Pierre had a sudden
flashback,
Bryce
broke
down, but came back
to reality in time to
give Hawk a bear
hug on his way out
the door. Publisher Ed
Riggins, along with Art
Director Ken McGuire,
Elena and Helen, had to
take the limo on a beer run to the
local mom and pop. World Color
Press exec, Lon Alberts and
his lovely wife Debbie
enjoyed the view of the
classic SF skyline from
the Hamm's Penthouse
perch. Chuck Katz and
Suicidal Jimbo shined
the "bird food" hors d'oeu-
vres but dug into the heavy
stuff-meat and potatoes for all.
A host of Thrasher ghosts-past, pre-
sent and future were also in and out.
Scott Starr traded story with original
thrashtographer Reginald Caselli.
There was Spain, Speyer, Fish, Fox
Kanights
videoed, Mark Madeo snapped shut-
ters, Joel Cherry had Polaroids. The
Bosticks led the Sacto N-Men Katen,
Cross and Stev-o. Blackhart was on
his third party of the evening after a
Santa Cruz Christmas bash, Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Muir confirmed that one was
in the oven, Dad and Mom Hawk
beamed, Brannon paraded his best
purple paisley smoker, Ms. Weidman
wondered out loud, Detters talked
about British bangers with Caballero.
the Carlsons cruised, Rotsaert
stayed off the hard stuff, Dave
Duncan was not to be con-
fused with Duncan the bar-
tender, Cochrane came
and went, Ancell busted
with humbleness at the
Skater of the Year Plaque
d'Art that was presented to the
Hawk man. Vitello left with a smile.
The City skate posse was also in the
house, and in a fitting end to the fes-
tivities, Noah, Shawny, Joey, Danny
and crew took the limo to the top of
Market Street for a downhill ride
through the city at two am. The last
thing anybody remembers is Nishi
and Rector headbutting on the 38th
floor balcony of the padman's posh
penthouse. Salut.
QUOTES
"I am a man. I work and I stink."
Jake
"Imagine, a TWS couple awash in a
sea of black leather and chrome."
Tony Hawk
"I could be worried, but then I'd be
someone else."

THRASHER...
THRASHER
APRIL 1971
Twenty years spans four generations.
of skateboarding. In 1971 your dad
was just growing out of his skate
phase. There was no skate industry
like there is now. Skateboarding was
as flat as your favorite surf spot on a
summer's day. A few surf gremmies
kept it alive on Hobie wood stringers
and fiberglass spoons. Clay com-
pounds were the wheels, but not of
choice. The hills of Hollywood and
Beverly were alive with blacktop:
bank sessions. Young sprouts like
Tony Alva kept the traditions of the
elders alive and kicking. "Driveway
slalom is where it's at," said 12-year-
old editor Kevin J. Thatcher in his
piece of the same name. Other
features included our Tic-Tac Sym-
posium where top pros like Torger
Johnson and Ed Nadalin described
the joys of kick turning for speed
down the sidewalk. Mofo rode a Big
Wheel off the high dive at Mt. Pleas
ant High School in East San Jose as
part of a story called Alternative Vehi-
cles and Other Death Traps. The
Trash column came to you from
southern France, where we had sent
Lowboy to cover the international
scene. It was his last correspon-
dence for the next four years. Low-
boy's excuse, "Not much happening
down there. Jake's Product Patrol
editorial, "Death of the Metal Wheel,"
drew heavy criticism from the folks at
Roller Derby. Mail Drop was running
10 to 1 in favor of making more ten-
nis courts available to skaters during
off-peak hours. The closest thing to
skate harassment was when the
cops pulled you over to check out
your board or have you spin a 360°
for 'em. In our "What If..." depart-
ment, we explored the possibility of
wooden ramps and a wild-haired
idea of actually building a cement
pool designed for skateboarding.
