NOTES
FROM THE UNDERGROUND
Look out
Madonna,
here's legy
Headlining the
Gathering of
the Tribes in
Palo Alto, Mr.
Pop proved
you're never
too old to
make a fashion
statement.
Some bands are too big for their own
britches. Others only think they are. Then
there's the few that are huge and still kick
ass. Such a band is ZZ Top. When it
comes to pure rock and roll Americana,
them long bearded hellraisers in cheap
sunglasses are a virtual institution. The
tres hombres recently jammed the night
away at SF's Cow Palace on a junkyard
stage of smashed cars, trucks and cranes.
In a prime illustration of the recycling
process, Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons
were hoisted into the air, then dropped into
a dumpster that metamorphosed the twin
longboard guitarists into sharper dressed
men. They then proceeded to do the tube
steak boogie as curvaceous construction
workers cleared the rubble... In a stunning
blow to the world of Skate Rock, Tree, the
all-pro porn punker quintet of Ross Good-
man, Jeff Grosso, Jeff Kendall, Corey
and Gavin O'Brien, has disbanded.
Grosso, who was half of the band's vocal
line-up, moved from S.J. to L.A. and grayer
pastures. Goodman is reportedly too shy
to sing without him... Taking up the slack,
Ray Barbee (guitar) and Lance Mountain
(drums) are rocking gigs as Republic at
assorted skate jams at the Powell Peralta
facility. On the Philly scene, skate man
dude Chuck Treece, from the hc band
McShred, has taken off on solo pursuits...
Fuck Corporate Rock is the latest project
going down at SST. It's not an album. It's
not a band. It's a movement to combat the
lameness of big money music. FCR T-
shirts and Corporate Rock Still Sucks
76 THRASHER MAGAZINE
bumper stickers are available. Chuck
Dukowski reports that SWA has dis
banded, but not before recording a new
album due out soon... Two-Bit Thief
released Another Sad Story, In The Big
City, which features the taunting vocals of
Andy Andersen, ex-warbler for Attitude
Adjustment and some raunch house
electric guitar... Put together front women
from The Devil Squares, The Screaming
Sirens, Raszebrae and Blood On The
Saddle. Pour them in a blender, hit purée.
Presto. Instant Ringling Sisters. Their
new album, 60 Watt Reality, is a moody
collection of surreal songs... For a stiff
dose of ska/reggae/R&B dial up Bread &
Circuses by Bop (harvey) San Jose's
moddest sons, The Odd Numbers are
rocking out a sound that combines
elements of 60s soul, punk and some
undeniable influences from the Jam... An
atomic blast from the past, Big Drill Car's
first explosive power pop Ep, is now
reissued on Cruz ... Kinghorse's self-
titled Lp, produced by Danzig, cover by
Pushead, is one dead nuts rocker...
Raging raves herald the coming of Soul
Brother Crisis Intervention, the new album
by NY's premiere rap metal band, Head's
Up
Attention Europe: have your best
spots ready, Jodie Foster's Army will
sample European skate cuisine with gig
dates all over the Continent on a five-week
tour kicking off in early March... King
Diamond's new album The Eye is a hard
rock opera about the French Inquisition.
Metallicaesque deathcore looms from the
jungles of Brazil on the powerful new disc,
Arise, from Sepultura. Skater/stickman
Igor olied over all three of his fellow band
members in a video last year...
Hawkwind, the space-age psychedelic
metal group that sometimes called the
Grateful Dead of heavy metal, has a new
one called Space Bandits... Meanwhile,
Motörhead's first three recordings have all
been re-released... Also set to be re-born
are the classic Damned discs, Machine
Gun Etiquette and Best of the Damned...
Talking heavy line-ups, check out
Satyricon: The Album, a compilation.
featuring Dharma Bums, Poison Idea,
Crazy 8's, Sweaty Nipples and Napalm
Beach, just to name a few....
RICKTER SCALE
-Brian Brannon
Tad, 8-Way Santa. Lp. The tales of Tad
continue, chock full of gear-grinding fables.
This one grows on you like swamp moss.
Just don't loan 'em your four-wheeler...
Antidote, Return 2 Bumn, Lp. Yup, it's the
same Antidote from NYC that put out that
killer 7". But they've turned metal/hc/rap.
Progression or regression? Maybe they
returned 2 burn your wallet... Helmet.
Strap It On, Lp. Been waiting a coon's age
for this. Toe-curling NY metal noisefest of
utter madness. Strap it to your turntable
and let it rip... God's Acre, Ten Gospel
Greats, Lp. Mudhoney mimickers with a
slightly harder edge. But who cares, it still
rocks... Goo Goo Dolls, Hold Me Up. Lp.
Not being a big fan of their first album, I
had my doubts about this one. But let me
tell ya, it's rocking good news... Melvins,
With Yo Heart, 7". Some say they're the
heaviest band in the entire universe.
Believe it. Available on several colors of
vinyl. Collect 'em all... Left Insane, Tool
Box, Lp. Here's an unusual item of So. Cal
hardcore jazz fusion with a taste of Bl'ast
that's almost all instrumentals. It left me
insane... Bad Religion, Against the
Grain, Lp. It's Brett and the boys, back with
another full-length feature. What's that?
Not as catchy as No Control or Suffer? We
know you'll get it anyway. Kreator,
Coma of Souls, Lp. You're gonna be in a
coma after you get the bill for thrashin'
your pad. Better than their last effort...
Killing Joke, Extremities, Lp. Well, well,
well, old Joke fans should have a field day
with this one. Getting back to the roots and
progressing is a hard thing to do these
days. Catch them on tour or you'll be truly
sorry... Blitzspeer, Live, Ep. NYC's skull
crushin', always bum rushin', almighty
Blitzspeer will touch the souls of all
gearheads. Anthems for dragracing and
cruizin'. STP rules. Cadaver/Carnage,
Lps. Deathcore collections are not com-
plete without these gems. Cadaver hails
from Norway, so don't confuse them with
England's Carcass. Carnage drained the
life right outta me... Ministry, In Case
You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up, video.
For those of you who blew it and didn't see
the best show of 1990 (or maybe ever),
check this. Everything you ever wanted in
video action-excellent editing, sonic
sound, bw and color footage, lots of stage
dives, guest appearances and even a
chain-link fence. Bravo!
