A-THON
Cal Poly throws down for
1990's skate marathon

The Story So Far. The Thrash-a-
thon is an annual event on the Call
Poly San Luis Obispo campus to raise
money for the American Cancer Soci-
ety. The seventh annual event took
place on the quad of the student
union despite a police report that dic-
tated, "No more Thrash-a-thon."
The Hero... Mike Mcintyre, for con-
vincing the city of San Luis Obispo, the
college board and the cops that the
event could be run incident-free and
provide a positive image for the
school. Concessions would have to be
made. There would be no skating.
between midnight and six a.m., thus
breaking a tradition of 72-hour non-
stop sessioning on the campus. Mike
also provided and assembled the
ramp, administered the details, skated
many hours himself and turned in his
homework in architecture class, "A
Design for a Recreational Facility in
Boston Harbor, on time.
The skaters John Fabriquer and
Doug Smith (who left in a cast with an
ankle tweak), Josh Swindell, Ray Dil-
lon, Sasha Steinhorz, Al Losi, Eric
Turvo, Royce, local Matt Pontius, Remi
Stratton, Steve Ruge, Lester Kasai,
Mike Youssefpour, Troy Slider, local
frat rats Tim Mitchell,
Tony Bulalas, Ryan
Iwanaga. Even Jeff
Ramos attempted the Over 3500
drop in. Although the clams raised
ramp was described as
"sketchy at best," every-
body put in solid hours.
