VERTICAL URGE
There seems to be a vertical renaissance afoot. If you ask me,
it's about time. I was beginning to think perhaps a whole gener-
ation of skaters would pass without experiencing a true vertical
sensation. For a time there were entire areas, cities, states
even, lacking a serviceable vert ramp. Now, our park list
includes venues in just about every state. It's not just parks that
house the big walls, either. Many individuals are opting for at
least a flat wall extension to their backyard layouts, and this is
only a start.
Renewed interest in vert can be traced back to the East
Coast, where, essentially, big ramps have always reigned. From
Boston, Massachusetts, to Pennsylvania, from Virginia Beach
Jimmy O'Brien through the Carolinas, from Atlanta to the Florida Keys. East
Coast guys like Tim Payne, Jim Reese and Blaize Blouin are
setting new standards for the building of super bowls using ply
and Masonite. Where Europe, New Zealand and Australia have
set the standard for public and free cement, these guys are rul-
ing the world when it comes to design innovations using less
expensive, reusable wood. The way things are going, the next
generation could be a carving one.
Our competition "Lowdown" this month features all vertical
events: the near disaster at Norfolk, a rain-out at the Skatepark
of Houston and the annual Thrash-a-Thon at Cal Poly in San
Luis Obispo. Also, inside you'll find Scott Needham's photo jour-
nal on New Zealand, skate paradise. We can't wait to show you
the wood bowls of the East Coast, but we'll have to. Look for
them next month.
