flip, 180 grab, one-footed
360' ollie, ollie impossible,
360 body varial, and that's
just to name a few. Rodney's
first run was even better.
Back in the bowl arena, a
skate hockey demo was in
progress. Dick Wagon, Jaks
spokesman, skate hockey
veteran and all-around
skate pirate, described the
idea behind this clandestine
street sport. "We'll use the
channels as goals. Usually
we use cones or whatever's
handy. We'll change sides
often so there's no advan-
tage and we've gotta drink
a puck. (The Jaks league
uses an empty Foster's
Lager can as the official
puck of choice). While the
Killer Clowns and the
Sharks went at it, NSA
president, Don Bostick
made some attempts at
crowd control: "Spectators
must get off the course.
before the city will let us
begin." Some of the more
agile went to the treetops
for a better view. Skip Con-
rad, Executive Director of
the fair tried his method:
"Green bands, red bands
and no bands must stand
behind the barricades. Our
insurance requirements re-
quire that you must move."
Skip said later he had most
of his security on the various
holes in the perimeter fencing
that was leaking skaters with
boards into the fairground.
As the crowd settled in
and the top ten were ready
to throw down, announcer
Dave Duncan summed up
the weekend. "Major ragin',
great crowd response, the
weather's great. The course
took a lot of pros by sur-
prise at first because there
weren't any small curbs or
whatever, but there are
enough obstacles, banks
and flow to get some high
speed and burly tricks
going. We saw the skaters
adapt even more on the
second day during qual-
ifying and really getting
into a groove. And here on
Monday, we're at the very
cream of the crop. More
tricks are being pulled over
the 6-foot gap of death.
The spine and channel are
being played with in a way
that says these guys are
not afraid of going all out."
With that, Double D. an-
nounced Noah Salasnek's
first run of the finals. "Air-
