DUDE IS DEAD
Okay, let's all get it off our chests, totally out in the open, front and center.
I'm talking about the wimp factor. I don't care about old school, new school,
street or vert, stand-up or laydown, black or white or anything else. No mat-
ter what you're into, it's time to let it out, make confrontations, work
together, get answers and start something. Skateboarding is a cause and
commitment that each and every roller must share and bear alike. Thrasher
was started with an aggressive attitude at a time when you had to be hard-
core to survive-parks were closing, ramps were shabby. It does take an
aggressive attitude to ride a skateboard. But, in turn, skating releases pent-
up stress and anxieties that otherwise make us mean and nasty human
beings. Skaters are forward movers, active artists and maniacal musicians,
thinkers, builders. Whining, whimpering, crying and endless talk will get you
nowhere. Retreating to your own safe little mini-ramp is not the answer, and
it won't last. You must act to keep your skating and your life interesting. If
not for yourself, do it for others. If you need a ramp, build one. If you can't
build a ramp, make some noise and get your city to do it. If they won't, then
vote, rally, boycott, whatever it takes. If the cops chase you out of one park-
ing lot, find another, but at least make them chase you. Find a pool, drain it.
Find a ditch, sweep it. Want a contest? Throw one. Need a zine? Make one.
Let them know you're there and not going away. If we don't make some
noise, skateboarding will continue to get pegged with that California
burnout surfer image of guys with no job, money or education sitting around
going. "Dude, gnar, like, duh." We don't have to put up with that.
