Ten years of skateboarding goes
by fest and furious when you've had
so mach fan. Add them to the prior
ten year era, associated with rapid
growth and changes on skating's his
tory. And you basically get hard
tough sharing and a hell of a lot of
good memories (from a Woody
veteran's perspective, of course!) I
sends my mind through a time warp
to even chink about all the cool and
really damb things we have done as
shaters (re pools, pipes, parks, road
trips, jump ramps, contests, streets,
ho-hos, headstands, allies, etc.)
Yeah, Thrasher Mag and I have a loe
in common, (especially in the last ten
years), let's just say we're he
brothers, and our blood is thicker
chan it all

Drainage ditches are the poor
monger's skatepark. Some are huge.
Some are smooth. Some are perfect.
Some aren't even too much of a
bust. Everyone has a favorite:
Pflugerville, New Mexico, Sano-
land. Tea Gardens, Flower Street,
Hitch Bitch Ditch, Asarco, Three
Fountains, Hobokam, the Stupors,
Back Nine, Wallos, the Spot, Hisco,
Montague
"Yes, but can he do a MeTwist?"
After secret training sessions in
Sweden, Mike McGill dumbfounds
the world in 1984, spinning a 540
mute grab. The twist soon becomes
a pre-requisite for pro victory.
Hosoi pulls them seven feet-plus.
Hawk spins 720's. The next mo-
ment, it's a video game. Of course.
Hawk also exploits endless vari-
ations on the basic twist: tail grabs,
stale fish, melancholy, one-footed.
varial and ollie. Then there's the
frontside gay twist 540" (a
backwards McTwist), Hauk grabs
stale, Danny Way grabs frontside.
Alfonzo Rawls spins ollie 340's and
hits his front track on re-entry.
McGill flips backwards indy back-
side 720's. Collin McKay presents
the backside ollie tail grab one-
footed McTwist. Danny Way makes
the first 900. A solid frontside care
grind in a backyard bowl still draws
a few hoots
"I'll just stay home and watch TV"
Stacy Peralta ushers in the skate
video and everyone else follows
suit. It brings a perspective the still
photo cannot and becomes the
Focus for visual transmission of
countless new shenanigans.
