The wheels are muffled on the
worn tracks, almost completely silenced. In the serenity of the first
class cabin on a train out of Frankfurt, bound for Münster, sit
Phil Merde and Buck Scout, a couple of Juggernauts from the
Southern Hood of India Basin. Comfortable in their seats, they
listen to the clat-
ter with thoughts
of the journey
which lay before
them. Buck re-
treats for a little
personal-stereo
privacy, pushes
the play button
and spins the vol-
ume to 10:
"...Johnny's got
his gun in every
country! There's a
war goin' on

After a side of
tape, Buck steps
out into the aisle.

He stares at the scenery rolling by like a merry-
go-round along the Rhein River. Across seething
currents, banks slope upwards hundreds of feet,
covered with miles upon miles of vineyards and
topped with castles every quarter mile or so.
Some are dilapidated, others pristine. Traffic is
very heavy on
the river-tour
boats, barges.
and mini-mer-
chant ships go
about their ex-
istence. Mile
after mile of
mighty river
surges past his
watching eyes.
Long ago, as a
little boy, Buck's
uncle said that
when he was a
lad of nineteen,
he spent some
harrowing days
on the banks of
this river during the second great war. He told of
gallantry on both sides. Atop ancient hilltops,
the 1,200-year-old castles have overlooked it all.
So much history is before Buck, he's completely
overwhelmed. A conductor announces the next
stop, Münster Bahnohof.
