get on their boards, they say girls can't
skate. What do they know? I've been
with skaters since the third grade. My
ex-boyfriend dumped me just because I
love skating. Should I quit skating?

If you have to ask yourself whether
or not to skate then you should quit. I
would say you've already made up
your mind. You need skating, skating
needs you. Skating is a totally cool
Iway of life. It's a form of creative
expression, an extension of the way
you feel, the way you act. Not to
mention, I think in general skaters
are more in tune with enjoying
themselves. Skaters who put you
down for skating because you're a
girl are even worse than non-skaters
who put down people for skating.
You know what's right-skating,
enjoying life, having fun. Keep it up.

I got an old pair of wheels and sawed
BLACKHART them in half. They were about 2cm wide
and you could only put one bearing in
but they worked. It improved my ollies
and shove-its but finally the fun ran out.
I popped a big ollie and when I landed,
my wheel fell and I was skating on my
bearings. I knew it was too good to be
true. If a company ever sells narrow
wheels that use only one bearing, I
would definitely buy those wheels.
Skinny Wheel Skater

Actually, you just hit the nail of
future skating design on the head:
Skinny, narrow, back to basics.
Skaters today are putting the wide
board boom on the back burner. The
evolution of design has gone beyond

function and now the 90s will begin a
trip into the past, returning to
whence we came. Bottom line,
skinny wheels, less weight, more
speed. Boards are becoming bi-
directional, not unlike the Banzai
boards of long ago with kicktails at
both ends. Narrower boards, much
less than ten inches. Again, less
weight, more speed. So, don't hold
you breath. Single bearing wheels
are not far off the horizon.
BABE ON BOARD
I'm a 14-year-old skate babe living in
Dover, Ohio. I hang out with skaters and
my boyfriend skates. But my friends
ask, "Why do you like skating?" When
they say that, I don't know what the hell
to do. My brothers skate too, and when I

Doc. Three years ago I saw some
dudes skating in a nearby park and ever
since I've been stoked on skating. The
first time I tried skating (3 years ago) |
ate it pretty badly. (I also got put down,
harassed and teased pretty badly too.) I
have tried skating since. Recently I've
been yearning to try again but whenever
I ask one of my friends to teach me they
(guys) either laugh, tease or make weird
faces. The reason is partly due to the
fact that most guy skaters hate and put
down girl skaters. So I go to the few girl
skaters we have and find out that most
of them are weird bitches. I was just
wondering, is it possible to learn to
skate on your own? No matter what
people say I'm determined to learn, but I
was wondering how to do it.
Honolulu, HI
You can do anything you want if
you want it bad enough. All it takes is
determination. Of course you can
teach yourself to skate. Practice.
Ride that board as much as possible.
If you can't skate at all then just
stand on it. Stand on it until you can
balance yourself. By leaning on the
board the trucks will turn. If you start
to fall or lean too much to one side,
turn the board to keep it underneath
you. It's much easier to do while the
board is actually rolling. Do this for
several hours everyday and even-
tually you'll be skating. Time on
board equals ability to skate. Don't
give up the ship. ■
