What do you think about all the
new ramp parks across the
country?
I think it's great, but it could die.
It's almost identical to how the
skatepark era was. You might think
insurance killed cement skate-
parks, but in a way skateboarding
died on its own. It seems there are
more skaters behind it this time,
instead of just businessmen.
Do you think cement skateparks
have put more wear and tear on
your body than if you grew up
on ramps?
Obviously. I have two torn
ligaments in my right knee, torn
cartilage and ligament in my left.
Although actually I only tore
cartilage in my left knee on
cement-all the other things
happened on ramps. Cement is like
steel, every time you fall on steel it
takes your breath away.
Where do you skate nowadays?
It varies. Right now I'm riding the
Vision ramp a lot. I was riding
Christian's, Lance's, Chino and
once in a while a mini-ramp in San
Gabriel. Every three months there's
a change. Lance's ramp always.
seems to be there.
What is your feeling toward the
hot new kids progressing in a
fraction of the time it took you?
Well, your first feeling is always,
"Oh, damn, those kids are sure
getting good," and you almost start
getting jealous. But it's just a new
era coming through. The new kids
know people can do the tricks, so
they're motivated. Like McTwists.
No amateurs did it before and now
I bet more amateurs do it than
pros. It's there for them. I always
find it funny when you see some
kid that does a McTwist and all that
stuff and they go to a pool and
can't carve at all. That's kind of
funny because carving is the first
trick you learn. But those kids have
no place to learn how to carve.
They definitely could learn it.
Eventually anyone can learn
anything; the worst skater could
become the next Tony Hawk. It's
the people who don't change with
the times who get ousted. Peralta
used to carve around the pools and
when people like Olson would bring
around tricks, I'm pretty sure Stacy
said-like we might say to other
people now-Those tricks are
lame." When skateparks started
dying, ramp skating came in and
those guys had a hard time
adapting from carving to going
back and forth on a stupid piece of
wood. The new kids are pretty cool.
It's a new era once again.
Which rookie pros do you think
will push skating in the 90s?
On vertical, Justin Lynch is going
to push the limit up, and Buster
Halterman and Steve Salisian-
he's got a hell-raising style. In
street, Ron Chatman and Jeremy.
Klein are definitely doing big things.
Omar Hassan could be the best
overall skater. He's got a skatepark.
history, too. Awesome vertical
skater, rad street skater.
You've been known as the
Crusher. Do you still arm
wrestle?
My arm wrestling days are over. I
ruined my arm last time. I didn't
lose, I was just beaten unfairly. I
arm wrestled everyone in Australia
and in a wild fluke I kept beating
everybody. Grosso had beat me all
my life but I started getting him all
the time. Then it came to Christian
whose arm is half my arm's height.
Christian was the only one who
beat me and he lifted up his elbow.
The name Crusher came about
when we were in Australia doing
our tours and we were being
interviewed by TV or radio and the
guy asked me if I had a nickname.
Just to make them laugh I said,
"Yeah, I have a nickname," and the
first thing that came to my head
was Crusher. Crusher Nash. The
hottest thing was that throughout
that entire demo he kept calling me
the Crusher. It was all fun.
What pisses you off?
Traffic. When I used to go to
Chino I'd have a heart attack
because I'd be stuck in traffic so
long. My blood pressure would be
raging so hard when I got there
that I'd take one run and fall on the
first trick. People with negative
attitudes piss me off. I'm an
optimist. People always say. "The
world's so messed up because of
the smog and stuff," which is true.
We are messing our world up
horribly, but, I mean, people still
stop at red lights. One symbol and
all over the world people stop for it.
It's cool that we're not so messed
up we can't have things like that.
Maybe in fifty years or so our world
will be clean. Chances are it won't.
but you never know.
Are you conscious of environ-
mental issues?
I try. I'm not like someone who
stops eating meat or won't go to
7-11 or Joe's Fast Eat because
they have styrofoam, but I'm
conscious of it all and have my
opinion on it. I always have an
opinion.
What are your feelings on
abortion?
Pretty much along the lines of
censorship. I think every woman
has her right. If it's not legal it's
going to happen the way it used to,
with gnarly doctors using lame
tools. They should make it safe.
What do you think of AIDS?
AIDS is a scary thing. Wise
words to the little kids: use a
condom! I think doctors will find a
cure soon. It can't go on like this.
What about the right to burn the
American flag?
That's one thing that should be
exempted from freedom of speech.
America is it, and if you don't like it
you should leave. You should be
allowed to do anything else except
burn the flag because that's
disgracing America. Freedom to
burn the flag is like burning
freedom.
Vandals. Mainly popular punk, not
hardcore. I like anything though. I
watch MTV and say, "Oh, I like that
song, and it could be something
totally lame like Madonna or Guns
'n Roses-even Michael Jackson.
You were in the Tom Petty "Free
Fallin video with Kele Rose-
crans and Joe Johnson. How did
that come about?
A guy at Vision named Brad
Fanshaw somehow hooked us up
with the Tom Petty crew and we put
the ramp in a rad site overlooking
San Fernando Valley. They put us
there with a bunch of models who
did not even know how to
skateboard, except for one who
knew how to surf and do kickturns
back and forth. She's the main girl
and we taught her how to skate-
board. She was the one in the
super-tight bike shorts. She was
hot and a very good sport. She
kept slamming left and right and
she just got back up like a cool
trooper. She even wanted to come
skate at my house afterward. We
also got to meet Petty-full on.
stoner.
What's your feeling on censor Any words of advice to kids who
ship?
are just picking up a skate-
board?
I saw that hot thing on Jello
Biafra who was speaking out
against censorship. I think censor-
ship is bullshit. Hearing a song and
seeing people do it, that's America
and freedom-it's being able to say
whatever you want to say.
If you had three wishes what
would they be?
I really only need one. I get
bummed out when I see handi-
capped people and I wish I could
make everyone equal, like wishing
people with no legs could walk, or
wishing deaf people could hear.
Sometimes I get bummed and I
watch TV and see "Help the i
Handicapped" or something, and I
realize those people would do
anything to switch shoes with me.
A handicap could be anything
people have a big complex
over-like someone who's got zits
on his face, to make him a clear
guy, or someone who's been deaf
for life, he can't even have a
preference in music-he just has to
be stoked on watching people
boogie.
What are your favorite bands?
I like a lot of old rock and roll, like
the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin,
AC/DC, Rod Stewart. Any type of
fast music like Buzzcocks, the Sex
Pistols, the Damned, Minor Threat,
Social Distortion, the Clash, the
You've got to learn the basics, but
who knows what the basics are
now? Learn how to fall first. It
seems like a lot of kids out there
are big-headed. They should try
not to be so competitive. Their
main concern is just getting
sponsored. A lot of my friends want
to get sponsors so bad that they've
forgotten about having fun. I'm
guilty of it too-calling people and
asking them to sponsor me-but if
people just have fun and work on
progressing, everything else will fall
into place. Then again, someone's
fun might be just carving around.
He may not have the drive to keep
learning tricks; he might be stoked
on his ollie up the curb but then he
gets bummed out because people
are always vibing him. You have to
push your friends but don't bum
them out.
Do you want to thank anyone?
My parents-they've been really
supportive. I'd like to thank all the
Whittier locals for providing a lot of
fun, Jeff Grosso for helping me out.
my friends who always go to my
contests, Brad Dorfman for giving
me a board and sponsoring me.
Larry Gordon for sponsoring me
first and Adrian Lazano.
Any closing comments?
I always hate when things end.
