TALKING ED
There is a transition underfoot in skateboarding. It's not due to a new silicone
wheel compound or a space-age truck design, and boards are still made of ply-
wood. It's not about corporate sponsorship, arena contests or taking skateboard-
ing to the Olympics in '92. Skate fashions and board graphics with flowers and
teddy bears will come and go as well. For the first time in almost a decade we're
getting close to seeing a whole new roster in the top ten-guys who weren't even
skating when Caballero was winning his first pro contest. Guys who were pip-
squeaks when Hawk was busting his first magic tricks. But these upstarts don't
care about your history, your story or even your money. They come out of the
backyard ramps and suburban street scenes and they just want to skate hard
every day.

Even with the advent of the super ollie and the new, improved lip trick, if you
peel back the hype and gloss and throw away the whining b.s., you'll find that
skaters still skate to their own tunes, build their own ramps, find their own pools, 1303 Underwood, San Francisco, CA 94124. Single copies: $2.50
drool over each freshly poured curb. We still pop wheelies-hell, even a few
360's-in between ollies and hurricanes. Yeah, parents whine, companies and
scams come and go, bad products may overflow warehouse shelves, but the
skaters continue to skate.
This month you may notice that Trash is back in the back of the mag where it
belongs. Our newest department, Ramp World, will keep you on top of the latest
construction and Breeding Grounds starts a series of scene reports that won't
stop until the last board has been overturned.
This month's staff pic features John Dettman, ace skatehead, music maker and
BSA motor mount. He started at Thrasher by strokin' a No.11 Exacto over reams
of galley type and now he's designing layouts and logos on the keyboards. This
Naughty Nomad will be a big part of our scene in the future world.
