PATROL

In the last five years,
skateboarding has
gone through
enough jump
ramps, street
plants and non-
functional
equipment to
last a lifetime. We as
skaters are ultimately
responsible for the direc-
tion of our sport. Now it
is time to set a few
things straight to all man-
ufacturers: Pointed noses
and whale tails are out,
ancient history, and the
multi-functional decks of
today will facilitate the
beginning of the new
era. As I stated last
month, get ready for it,
because if you're not it's
going to blow you away.

B.B.C. Pads
Life's a Beach, 1979 Palo-
mar Oaks Way, Carlsbad,
CA 92009
The safety equipment industry is
pretty much controlled by one
name-that name is Rector. A lot of
people want a piece of that action
and B.B.C. is no exception. I tested
the pads and found them to be well-
constructed, but they lack the heavy
padding and the caps wore extremely
fast. The B.B.C pads were com-
fortable, but I didn't feel as
confident as I have with Rec-1
tors or Pro Design. I bet
they cost plenty and that
makes me skeptical
about whether they
will be big sellers.
But hey, check them
out yourself; maybe
they're for you.
Down South
Number 3
Down South, 2837
University #2, San Diego,
CA 92104.
Headed south? Maybe you will see
some rippers riding the Down South
#3. A new company with a good
product is hard to find these
days, but these guys have
it down. The blank is a lot
like an H-street-simple
yet functional. Where most companies
spend mucho bucks on graphics, these
guys say, "Shine that, the decks will sell
themselves." The specs are 32.25" long,
10.5" wide, with either a 5.25" or 6" nose
and a mongo 7" tail. If you aren't into all
the hype, maybe this is your type.
Purist
Vision, 1395 Lyon St.,
Santa Ana CA 92705
Vision is still making wheels even
though their track record is pretty
spotty (Shredders, Blurrs and Pro-
tons). The new Purist is surprisingly
fast. They have kept it simple (no col-
ors and an even shape) and the
result is a quick even-wearing ball of
urethane. The wheels are white and
small (60 mm) with some "dyno
graphics." Don't let the name fool ya.
If they cost about $6 they're worth it.
Jeff Kendall
Santa Cruz, 4401 Soquel
Dr., Soquel,
CA 95073
Jeff Henball
The Santa Cruz
board line is
known for its
classic shapes
and functional
designs, and
this Kendall is
my pick to click.
As I mentioned,
pointed noses
are out. The
Kendall features
a blunt nose and
even-tapered
tail. I have seen
many of them on
the road and all
the rider say they love 'em. The cave
is so deep that it comes with an
angled riser pad to be sure you get
optimum truck placement. This
Kendall is one to keep you out late at
night. It is 31.25" long and 10" wide
(8" wide up front). It has either 4.75"
or 5.25" of nose and a 6.5" tail. The
side screen is a must so you can see
the style and shape amidst the
stacks of boards at the shop.
Tony Hawk
Powell Peralta, 30 S. La Pat-
era Lane, Goleta, CA 93117
It was not long ago that I clued you to
the new Powell Peralta concave. Well,
that was then, this is now, and main man
Tony Hawk got
himself a custom
cue. The new P&P
wood is light and
surprisingly strong.
Add to that some
hot shapes, some
of the best skaters
in the world, and it
doesn't take a
genius to figure
out that this deck
is bound to move
out the door. Tony
is the master at
going forward or
backward and this
shape highlights
that riding style,
with probably the
biggest nose on
the market. His stick comes in at 32.5
long, 10.25" wide, with a 6.25" nose,
6.75" of tail and an awesome 14.5"
wheelbase for disasters and switch-
footed skaters alike. The middle of the
deck is sunken lower than the old P&P
decks. They are back and they are bad.
Andrew Morrison
New Deal, P.O. Box 3757,
Costa Mesa,
CA 92628
This month I got
a box from the New
Deal and I am here
to tell ya, "Look
out! The deck of
choice for me is the
Andrew Morrison.
When Paul Schmitt
left Vision, he took
his ideas and inge-
nuity and formed
the New Deal. The
look of the concave
picks up where the
S4 Footlock Fx left
off. Smooth and
thorough are the
The
best words to describe it. A healthy nose
and a not-too-long tail make it a ripper.
Check these numbers: 32" long, 10" wide,
with an eight-hole front that gives it either
a 5.5 or 6' nose and a 6.75" tail that cre-
ates maximum levitation power. More from
these dudes in the future.
