The Nightbreed Chronicles
Clive Barker
Titan Books
Based on the book and the
movies, these chronicles provide
detailed data on the inhabitants
of Midian, sanctuary of the
Nightbreed. Brilliant photos of all
the characters on the set of this
phantasmic flick are accom
panied by descriptions straight
from the pen of C.B. himself. They
provide information not covered
in the movie so you can get a bet-
ler grasp on the Nightbreed tribe.
Consider this a complete guide
to identifying the Nightbreed and
remember, to know them is to love
them. Roasted

This graphically provocative
Japanese nightmare comic has
been translated to English, but it
still reads right to left, back cover
to front. It's a thick black and
white journal of sadistic violence
that will turn a good stomach to
mush. The first story depicts an
artist who cuts and bleeds
himself to use the blood as his
paint. The pictures he paints are
the stories in his book-brutal
tales of horror not normally seen
in the U.S.A. The writing is full of
demented black humor, but it is
sometimes a little confusing.
especially the Japanese sound
effects. Still, the extreme effect of
the drawings will make it a cult
favorite. Definitely a "sick" book
to add to your collection or flaunt
at a prude party. Pushead

FUTURISTIC TV SCHLOCK by Brad Moldstein
Imagine the world a constipated mess of pitiless lies and degrading
mondo politico brain mashers. Imagine "Biker Cop Attitude Adjusters."
Imagine a place where television just keeps getting better and better.
Then the sky begins to fall. One second you could be staring into the
tube or trying out a new product, the next moment you would be dead.
Is this the future of the Bush era? Naw, this is Terminal City Ricochet.
TCR shocks and provokes. It's a raw and outrageous satire about
a city at the end of the line. Produced by E. Motion Films, Ltd., of Van-
couver, Canada, it's scheduled to premiere by the end of this year. TCR
promises to twist and entertain its audience by giving them a front row
seat for the social and spiritual disintegration of a society. Situated
somewhere in the cultish quagmire between Repo Man and RoboCop,
TCR has an incredibly varied cast of actors, including spoken word per-
formers, poets, visual artists, rock and roll types (Joey Shithead of DOA
and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys) and even "Canada's Greatest
Athlete," wrestling legend Gene Kiniski. It's a buff blend of strangeness
and intensity.
The premise of the burning celluloid is similar to Devo's theory of
de-evolution-an exaggerated make-over of society. There's mean man
Big Boss Ross Glimore, played by Peter Breck (who first appeared with
Bad Bob Mitchum in the hod-rod classic Thunder Road, but is prob
ably most remembered as Nick Barkley in Big Valley). The Boss is Ter-
minal City's honcho, a TV talkshow host turned sicko politician who
uses the power of the tube to food his brand-name version of unreality
to a numb-nutted population. There's an amnesiac hockey superstar
goalie, Ace "The Savior" Tomlinson, played by Tremain Houde. Enter
Bruce Coddle, Glimore's tattily dressed, deranged enforcer played by
Jello. Joey Shithead and Kiniski play rough and tumble Biker Cops who
pound their roles in tempered heaps of loving violence. All of these
elements mix into a tangled soup of covert action that will surely start
you wondering.
Ross The Boss is facing re-election when he discovers that the "magic
key" to his skeleton closet has disappeared. He flips, invents a con
spiracy of rock and roll terrorists and develops Kiddie Controller, a sort
of final solution to the rebel youth. In the end, Ace does glorious battle
with crazy man Gilmore.
One of the coolest things about this movie is the soundtrack, which
features DOA doing a couple tunes, some with Jello singing.
NoMeansNo and Keith LeBlanc. It's already available on Alternative
Tentacles, the same label that did the soundtrack for David Lynch's
Eraserhead. So there you have it,
the strange life of Terminal City, or
is it really that strange after all?
Maybe it's just a preview of reality.
Like the wandering and wondering
Ace puts it, "Holy Puck! These are
serious times. I think."

BLITZ
Okay, folks, in case you didn't
catch on last month, Media Blitz
is a column devoted to off-board
entertainment-you know, rainy-
day/broken-arm diversions. If you think we're leaving anything out
(macramé, backgammon strategy, lawn darts, etc.) just let us know.
Now let's fire off some...
QUICK STROKES
Fans of Peter Bagge's Neat Stuff comics will be stoked to hear that,
although Bagge has discontinued the neat title, his new comic, Hate,
looks even neater. Expect more tweakin' tales and twisted art from
the creator of such memorable characters as the Goon in the Moon,
Studs Kirby and, of course, the Bradleys, the furious family that makes
the Simpsons look like the Brady Bunch. More comic news: Dark
Horse has just reprinted the Aliens four issue mini-series, this time
in full blazing color. Heavy-duty intergalactic freak show, dude. All
zine-heads should be on the lookout for the blazing latest edition of
Aaron Elliot's Cometbus zine from Berkeley, CA. The Cometbus is
90+ pages of excellent fiction, features, fotos and foolishness that rules
over any slick mag or Xeroxed rag you can think of. You may not
want to give it to your little sister for Christmas, but the Freddy Kreuger
talking doll is now available for all interested problem children. How
sweet, fresh meat. Of course, if you prefer words to action, there's
Freddy's Maxx F/X Kit. This is a Ken-style doll that is poseable and
can be changed into good ol' F.K., complete with hand, mask, sweater,
pants and boots. Doll collectors across the land have no doubt already
seen the Kenner Beetlejuice collection. Bart Simpson talking
squeezables from Mattel should be out now. Pee Wee Herman dolls
are still available, but Ed Grimley dolls are said to be the true
collectibles. If you're in a TVeg mood you might want to check out
the College Dating Club on NCTV (National College Television). It's
an updated Dating Game with some hilarious moderations that por-
tray the battlefield of young love with brutal honesty. Attention all
card collectors and political science majors, be on the lookout for
Friendly Dictators Trading Cards-thirty-six of America's most embar-
rassing allies by Bill Sienkiewicz. Hot rumors from tinseltown report
that Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure Part II is in the works. The
forecasted plot, according to top secret, highly placed sources, has
our two excellent protagonists thrown off a cliff in Death Valley by their
evil twins from the future, after which they get a guided tour of hell
and heaven from the Grim Reaper himself. Filming is scheduled to
start in September. Akira the movie is said to be the most spec-
tacular example of Japanese animation to date. Psycho-kinetic youth
are used as weapons for the government in this cataclysmic drama.
set in post WW II neo-Tokyo. Media Blitz's rabid comic/vid expert, Rick
Roasted, gives it a 7.9 on the Rick-ter scale, so you can bet it's a sure-
fire city wrecker. Look for Rick's Seismic Picks throughout this
column-his tremor-filled brain may be structurally unsafe, but Rick
knows his media. You can also follow the Akira saga through the comic
series; it's the same basic plot with some variation in story line to keep
you guessing.
