BOAR
WORLD PREMIERE
BIG NAMES, BIG BUCKS
WORLD SKATEBOARD TOUR
Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas
April 27th, 1990
Hey, so check this out. The day after the gig
at Phillips' park I'm hanging out with Christian,
you know Christian Hosoi, his dad Ivan and his
buddy Sergie Ventura, right. We're checkin' out
the downtown area, skating around and takin
photos when we decide, hey, we're hungry. So
bingo, we're all over the buffet at the Hyatt
Regency in downtown Dallas. In style, right?
Then, just when we notice this mega-big glass
building next door, an old man strolls up to us
and whispers into Ivan's ear that it's called the
Reunion Arena, where the Dallas Mavericks
basketball team plays. Now, check this out, this
guy, Dr. Seagull or something, tells us that the
arena is playin' host that very night to some
grand skateboard challenge. And get this, it's
payin' out a $5,000 purse to the winner. Five
large! Can you believe that? In fact, the amateur
competition was going down inside the arena
as we spoke. The guy blows away after a while
and we're sittin' there thinkin' it over. Finally we
decide to go check out the arena. There are
all these skate rats hanging outside going, duh.
We have to scam some backstage pass or
something 'cause they don't even recognize
Christ. But then this one cop recognizes him
DETOUR
and we get ushered down an escalator to the
full tunnel. When we get to the end, the dude
throws open the door and there's the biggest,
baddest asstist vert ramp sittin' in the middle
of the arena, with this big scoreboard all
flashing like a video game hangin' over the
ramp. We just look around and go...no way!
And you know what? There's all the guys who
were at Phillips' park the day before: Losi, Tony
Magnusson, Reese, Bod Boyle and Danny Way.
All these guys-Buck Smith, Steve Salisian,
Mike Conroy, Justin Lynch. Are you kidding me?
We walk in and they're already ripping the ramp.
Ripping. I seen Buster Halterman, Jeff Kendall,
Jim Murphy, Todd Congelliere, Bryan Penn-
ington, and even that guy from Australia who
rips, Adam Luxford or whatever. He had just
placed second in the amateur event behind
Chris Gentry. But anyway, Adam was was go-
ing to turn pro-what a dick. Then I seen Craig
Johnson was there pulverizin' the ramp like a
mad man. We had just partied with him the
night before and he didn't even tell us.
Anyway, there were about 1,500 to 2,000
by Jason 'Ozzy' Bankhead
people there. Christian gets in the top twenty
real clean like, doing all airs and a lot of lip tricks
and shit. When he starts pumping that ramp
and kicking out one-footed methods, look out.
He did ollies so big and then did head-high
frontside and backside tail grabbers. And the
Christ air. McTwist. I can't believe it-all these
years since McGill made up the McTwist and
still not that many guys can pull it. It's a gnarly
trick, man, and Christian, wham McTwist, brah.
Well, Buster Halterman was doing 'em too.
Yeah, Buster was doing the air thing. He's hot.
Oh, and get this, Justin Lynch got fourth frickin'
place, man. I was just readin' that Thrasher in-
terview about him and, hah, fourth. He trashed
that ramp. But you know, it was gettin' scary
for a minute, Danny Way was looking like, tough
to beat, you know. Shee...he does stuff so rad
for how little he is. Danny got second. Adam
Luxford got fifth, in his first pro contest. What
a dude. And Bod Boyle was third-man, those
nose grinds are the gnar move. Oh, did I men-
tion that Christian won? Oh yeah, he came in
and just won it. Is that BAD or what? Later.
