            REATEGUI
(From page 44) It's a whole different
thing than riding a short board-like
driving a Cadillac.
Do your parents appreciate your
success?
Oh yeah, they're stoked. My dad
always takes Thrasher to work and
shows his buddies. They're all into
it because their kids skate. My family
is pretty supportive
the next minute you can be down
What tricks impress you the most
these days?
Bod does the rad frontside nose-
one of the best skaters because he
pick grind. Tony Hawk is radical. He's
can skate street, vert, anything.
What kind fo music do you like?
I like a lot of old punk rock. All of
the classics-TSOL, Adolescents
California punk. I used to go to all of
the punk gigs back in '86 at the
Would you say that Eddie Reategui Olympic auditorium. There would be
is a good boy?
Of course. You just have to do what
you have to do. Skateboarders are a
certain breed of people. There are
millions of people in the world and
there's only a handful of us. I think
all of the skateboarders should unite,
be cool to one another and not have
stupid headtrips. If you see a skater
you should say, "What's up?" Even
if you don't know him, he's still cool
just because he skates. That's the
way I look at it.
How do you feel about competition?
Lately there are too many kids out
there. When two people drop in at the
same time, there are certain rules.
Whoever does the raddest trick,
whoever busts out, stays. The other
guy has to get out. Lately when you
go in there and start doing your rad-
dest tricks, these guys are still in
there doing rock 'n rolls or axle stalls.
waiting for you to fall. If they do that
you've got to just take them out.
You've got to do an air right in front
of them, as close as you can to them
without hitting them. They're new-
comers and they just have to learn.
What was your favorite contest?
There were a lot of them. I liked the
Del Mar contests a long time ago,
when we used to throw boards and
have sticker tosses. That was fun. I
used to have about four boards in my
car and I'd climb up on top of a van
and go, "Who wants it?' I'd have five
hundred people screaming. Then I'd
throw the board to the crowd. It was
a bizarre, incredible sight to see all
of these people fighting over a board.
But then I would always jump down
there and be the referee. I'd pat them
on the back and go, "You and you.
You're outta here, you're outta here!
Then I'd look to see who had the
board. If you don't do that people get
hurt. I've seen a lot of people get
hurt. In fact, a couple years back I
went to Hawaii and busted my leg.
A week after I got my cast I went to
the OP Pro, Huntington Beach, to
watch the surfing and skateboarding.
I was really bummed because I
couldn't skate. I was in the audience,
relaxing, having a good time. Christ-
ian and Steadham walked by so I
started yelling. "Hey! Hey!' like fifteen
other kids. I was part of the crowd.
Anyway, Steadham threw a bunch of
stickers and I got trampled. And I had
a busted leg. I got knocked down and
no one knew who I was. So you never
know-one minute you could be up,

four bands every Friday night. All of
the killer bands, like Bad Religion,
Social Distortion, Chili Peppers.
Do you play an instrument?
I play bass, a little guitar, drums.
I try to play it all. I'm not that good.
but I try. Playing music is fun.
Creating sound. It's fun to jam.
What was the saddest moment in
your life?
When I broke my leg and my
girlfriend broke up with me-all in the
same month.
What country do you like most?
I like the United States of Califor
nia. My favorite place on Earth is right
here where I live. From my house I've
gone surfing in the morning, driven
to the mountains for snowboarding
in the afternoon, then gone home
and out on the town in the same day.
How do you feel about the way
contests are structured?
challenges because when I think I
have problems there are people in
this world who are much worse off
than I am.
Are you happy with your position
in life?
Stoked! And it's not the money. It's
the time we're living in right now. If
I was born forty years ago I would
have had to fight in the war. That
would have been a rush, but I'm glad
I'm skating. I'm glad I do what I do.
Most people wake up in the morning
and go to work; they live their lives
not having that much fun. Skaters,
jeez, look at the fun we have. Look
at what we do, as a hobby-but it's
for real.
How would you like your epitaph
to read?
Lived Fast. Skated Hard. Had Fun.
Any parting words?
Yes, I would like to say thanks to
everyone at Alva for their hard work;
Christian and Ivan Hosoi for helping
me make the right decisions in my
career; my girlfriend for supporting
me all of these years; Rob Heath,
Jonathan Paskowitz, Herbie Fletcher,
Tony Alva and John Falahee for
showing me the difference between
surfing on longboards and short
boards. I'd like to thank Don Szabo,
Victor, Damien Saunders and Noah
roars with approval and turns it back
down at the 15'4" mark. Okay, our
next contestant is Eric Dressen, com-
ing off a fine performance on the
street course. Let's see what he can
do here. There he goes, totally haul-
ing ass, and-oh-up there at 15'11",
Dressen is fully compressed. Next
up, Scott Oster and he goes for the
roof, hellishly high at 16:
Yeah, John, he was into the
Masonite where it says Subway
sandwiches.
Our next verticalist is Reese Simp-
son. Reese has been known to go
high. He gets way up there. Reese
grabbed his board stalefish up at
16'2" and slid out but lost it. Reese
was totally rad on that, though, and
they're going to count it.
Okay here comes Christian down
the ramp, pumping across the floor,
pushing it hard, vaults through the
tranny and throws himself into a large
frontside thruster, fully doubling at
the waist, total concentration and
yes, it pays off with a big 16'6" mea-
surement. So that's it, Christian wins
with the highest vertical wall ride.
And we're outta here before the
mob starts tearing the clothing off our
backs, Randy
What's wrong with that? Hey little
girl, want a sticker?
for showing me what's up in snow LYNCH
boarding. Thanks to all the guys who
let me skate their ramps and pools
throughout the years, and to every
person I've ever skated with. It's been
killer. And I want to thank America
for giving us the right to be free and
choose what we want to be.
I have mixed thoughts. I wish they
could be different, but that's just the
way it is. A lot of skaters think the
same way I do. I think they should
have a different ramp every time.
Start making new types of everything.
How do you want people to see HAWAII
Eddie Reategui?
I don't try to impress anybody. I am
what I am, and that's about it. I do
what I do. If they dig it, well, cool, I'll
give them my high five. If they don't,
well, sorry.
Do you live comfortably?
Oh yeah. I've been living like a
king for the last couple of years. I've
been trying to save all of my money.
You only live once and you've got to
make the best of it in this life. Learn
as much as possible.
Can you sum up your feeling about
skateboarding in a sentence?
It's a lifestyle, something to do
it's what you are.
You're a man of few words.
Yeah. I'm just into what I'm into.
Do you have any long-term goals?
Yeah. I'd like to open a nightclub
some day. I'd like to buy a big yacht
and sail around the world. Or else
buy a house in Brazil and live on the
beach, be a bum, surf every day. A
Robinson Crusoe. Or else I could just
get a job like everybody else, be nor-
mal. But I don't think I want to do that.
There are hopes and dreams, but
then again there are ways and
means. I look forward to waking up
in the morning. I look forward to life's

THE DEMO
Okay Randy, it's total chaos right
now. I just have to describe this for
you. There are five BMX'ers out there
fully getting crazy, there are ten
skaters skating the street course,
there are tons of people sitting on the
floor, Primo and Diane are trying to
do a demo for God. Ron Chatman,
Scott Oster and several of the street
stars are skating with abandon
through everyone, there are clueless
people everywhere. Ah, Randy, it's
THE HIGH WALL
a horrible thing. I think it's over.
We're going into the highest
wallride event right now. Randy, we
haven't seen this type of action since
Tony Alva and George Orton went at
it during the Freeformer Pro back at
the Long Beach Arena sometime
back around the turn of the century.
Well, uh, yeah.
Okay, we're going to get started
with the first attempts. It definitely
looks like favorite Christian Hosoi will
have no problem here. Here goes
Tony Hawk, jamming down the
gangplank ramp set up opposite this
huge vertical slice of transition. Tony
goes waaaay up there as the crowd

California versus Minnesota.
"I don't want to bust out on Califor
nia, but our scene is better. Don't
believe the hype with California. I ex-
pected so much from California and
I got let down. You never get to skate
there. Everyone's jealous, they don't
let you skate their ramps. In the
Midwest, you show up and every-
one's cool. They all let you skate their
ramps and parks for free. They let you
stay at their house and they don't get
all jealous of you. We have the best
facility in the whole country. Our
ramp is smoother than a baby's ass.
We have so many ramps, but no pros
know about it. I tell them about it and
they don't believe me. I think we have
the best skate scene. Credit is due
in Minnesota."
...his future.
"I'm going to skate until I can't. I'm
totally addicted to it. I kind of want
to become an architect because I can
draw well. I'm into art. I'm good with
wood. I don't want to get into the
skateboard business after I'm done.
I don't want to have anything to do
with it. It's a no-win situation. Even-
tually, I'll be thirty years old going,
That was the funnest time I ever had.
Man, my best feelings just went out
the door!"
anything else?
"I want to say one thing. I'm a nice
guy, I'm just shy. I'm not a dick, I will
talk to anybody. I'm cool to anybody.
The only way I'd be a dick to you is
if you were a dick to me. Skating is
pure jealousy, most of it."
