Shoe phones, car bombs and jet packs have fallen by the wayside. The only tools Agent
Runaway and his ilk need to ply their treacherous trade are a good stick, a decent frame
of mind, a ration of water, matches and a snake bite kit. Above: Keith Stephenson turns
the clock back to a move not seen in print since the late seventies-floating frontside,
breaching the danger zone between two giant Ameron tubes. Right: Kenny King, bundled
against the desert winter elements, thrusts down a hard-tracked power line before the
Time Tunnel Effect of the tubular landscape. Opposite: In more favorable weather, the
pipes in the central California plains are a paradisical locale for the wishful thoughts
of the classical loop-da-loop. Doug Demontmorency is no stranger to giant terrain, or
the cajones it takes to ride it. Here he lightly creeps a backside toward one of the numerous
worm carcass mouths littering the set for the upcoming sequel to the movie Dune.
