STAFF INFECTION
Skateboarding has evolved quite a bit over the last decade and so has Thrasher. Along
with all the carves grinds and airs, we've covered the style, lingo, action, sounds and pure
energy that make skateboarding and skaters unique.
Part of Thrasher's evolution is due to the addition of Ken McGuire to our staff in 1986.
I met Ken several years earlier during one of our many safaris into the skatepark-infested
grid of the greater LA basin. Ken suffered a broken femur in 1978 while negotiating Skatopia's
legendary halfpipe. During his subsequent rehab he developed into a sharp-edged graphic
artist, cartoonist and typographer while fully regaining his four-wheeled form. Over several
years and countless inquiring phone calls, I became familiar with Ken's dedication as a
Thrasher reader and a skater. With a flare for wildness and an outspoken attitude, Ken
pushes himself at the risk of chafing others, in true skater style. He rolled into our offices
with enthusiasm and new ideas. Now as art director, he'll be using his talents to keep Thrasher
on the cutting edge in the nineties.
One thing we've always agreed on from the the beginning was that if there was nothing
happening, we would go out and make something happen. With Ken on the boards we're
sure the nineties will bring new surprises, plenty of terrain to conquer, a fresh approach
to an exciting world and a magazine that will mix the hardcore of old with the upstarts of
a new decade.
