inexpensive DBS's. I'm 14. I've
been skating for two years and my
knees are hacked. If I run 100 feat
they hurt. I just started wearing
kneepads three months ago. I wish
that when I started skating some of
my main influences wore kneepads
when they were photographed.

Good thing we never printed any pic-

GROSSONOVA
Congratulations to Jeff Grosso for
making every girl's heart swoon with
thoughts of him being lonely. I can't
find mine now, it's lost in all this
snow. Jeff should come up and help
me dig it out.

ONCE FRIGHTENED, NOW
ENLIGHTENED
This letter is dedicated to all the
people who made skateboarding
widespread. I'm 17 years old. Two
years ago I was a non-skater and a
nerd. I was afraid of shots, water,
oceans, heights, flying, skeletons()
and getting hurt. I had played.
hockey for three years and skied for
four years but I was still afraid of get-
ting hurt. Then I bought a skate-
board. I had a nightmare about the
skeleton on the graphics. Since then
I was never afraid of skeletons
again, or heights, or getting hurt. I'm
not afraid of anything now. Except
about it? It's okay to destroy the en-
vironment with cars and kill every-
one with cigarettes, yet it's not okay
to skate down the street or listen to
the music you want to. Don't get me
wrong, I'm patriotic and everything,
I just think we should get our
priorities straight.
Paul Boucher
P.S. I hope George Bush gets this
somehow.
Even if he got it I don't think he'd get
it. T-ed
POTENZA'S POTENTIAL
Completely major on-the-road
piece by Vaj Potenza in your Jan.
1990 issue. Bound to leave a mark
on skating consciousness, just like
Kerouac did on literature. And
shredding all those foreign parks is
bound to have left a few marks on
Vaj Potenza, too.

PIPE DOWN
Last year in May, June, July my
dad promised me a halfpipe. We
had it all figured out (cost and plans)
but he forgot about it. Then I asked
him again and he said, "Stop bug-
ging me, don't ask me again till next
year. So I waited, waited and
waited. Now it's 1990, but I'm too
scared to ask him. Should I or not?
Jon Peckham
Newburgh, NY
Sure. Tell him it's either build a
halfpipe or you're going to take up
the tuba. T-ed
BETTER THAN OAT BRAN
You know what I thought was
cool. I was recently reading the back
of an Apple Jacks box. They said
you could send in proofs of purchase
and get free stuff. Well, I figured out
that to buy enough boxes to have
enough proofs of purchase you
spend $41 more than the retail
value. And I also figured out that
you'd save $40 by ordering 2 years
of Thrasher. Well, I will still skarf
Apple Jacks, but I'll never get free
stuff. Thanks for not ripping me off

water, especially if it's in a pool with Hey, you just saved $81 total. Time
nice transitions. My whole person is
infected with this "skate virus." If
there is any medicine against this
disease, please don't tell me.

NUCLEAR INSULT
I just read your article on Nuclear
Assault (Jan. 1990) where they say
they are a positive band trying to get
a good message out to us youth.
How can they really say that when
in the picture Glenn is sitting there
with a can of Bud?
FREEDOM

Picture it: some kid standing in
wood shop, standing still during the
national anthem. It got to the part
about the land of the tree and I
started wondering, what's so free
to buy some Thrasher products. T-ed
