MINI AMPED
Two words come to mind in sum-
ming up the Mini ramp competition
on this day: Western Regionals, for
it was the left coast skaters taking
all six top spots and nine of fifteen.
So much for stats. Dominating the
short halfpipe with spine configura-
tion in practice was Wade Speyer.
Example: frontside ollie-to-bench
(three feet back from lip) then 180°
ollie-to-50/50 grind on lip to revert
re-entry. Did you get that? Wade
was the sick pick to click as he
hauled ass around the ramp in a
wild style. His only mistake was
overskating the ramp by launching
a one-way corner air into the kiddie
mini well before his time was up.
but fourth place ain't bad. Another
looker in the mini comp was
Alphonso Rawls, who took the trick
prize for his 540° spin over spine
and third place. The top spots went
to smooth skating and control in
the personage of, once again,
Jason Rogers, 2nd, and Eric
Sanderson, 1st. Jason managed to
tap the power needed for high
ollies and airs mixed with controll-
ed lippery while Eric, who did a fair
share of training to win this one, us-
ed his freestyle experience and
machine-like determination to con-
vince the judges he deserved it.
Eric's winning trick was the 360
varial over the spine but his master
list included such gems as disaster
Smith grind-to-revert, nollie-to-
pivot-to-rock and roll, one-footed
disaster, 360° revert, Smith-to-tail
and backside disaster-to-frontside
Smith. Who said he's giving up
freestyle?
EPILOGUE
Such was the story of the 1989
National Amateur Finals and the
end of the road for another NSA
season. At press time there were
some important questions left
unanswered regarding the future
of this beleaguered organization.
There is a tentative schedule for
1990 but that includes a lot of "to
be announced" venues, and we've
seen that movie. As far as who is
turning pro and getting models
today well, news at eleven.
