DANNY WAY
(From page 68)
Yeah, but will you be a politician?
Will you be a born-again Christian?
Will you be a big burly guy who
kicks butt on people who used to
pick on you? Or will you be a
Rastafarian and take back every-
thing you said?
I'll be a real estate agent.
What will you be doing in ten
minutes?
Stalefish McTwist. I think that's might say, 'Oh, I'm gang banging. I
harder than a 720°
How long did it take you to do it?
Four tries. But I can't do it every
time. It was easy when I learned it
but I can't make them that often now.
What's your favorite trick?
Frontside air or an indy nosebone.
They're rad; you can torque and
tweak them.
What's your favorite skate spot?
Daytona Beach, Florida, Stone
Skating the mini-ramp here in Edge Skatepark.
Houston.
What bugs you most about the
skate industry?
I don't like how people boycott con-
tests. The industry's pretty good. But
I don't understand why everyone
hates H-Street. Like Allen Losi. He
vibes H-Street a lot. I personally don't
care if he's going to vibe my team,
but back when he rode for Variflex
he and Eddie Elguera used to get spit
on because everyone hated Variflex.
And he used to wonder why he would
get spit on. Now look at him.
What person has influenced you
most in your life and how?
My mom has influenced me a lot.
When I'm bummed she motivates
me and I want to skate again.
Any message for the readers?
Skate for fun and don't go out of
your way to put yourself in a certain
image, because it's a waste of time.
What was your favorite contest?
Houston last year, because I'd
never skated a metal ramp before, or
been to Texas. I had a lot of fun.
How long have you been a pro?
About seven months.
What has it been like being a pro?
There's a lot more traveling. I like
traveling but not traveling consis-
tently. I like to be home and skate.
You don't have time to learn tricks
when you're traveling. At contests
and demos you do old stuff over and
over and it gets boring.
What is your daily routine?
Right now I've been waking up
around 8:30 and working on my ramp
until about 3:00. Then I'll skate and
come home and ride my motorcycles
around a bit. Then I'll do homework.
Is skate history important to you?
Sort of. I think a lot of the tricks
nowadays are repeats of tricks they
did a long time ago. Like reverts,
those are all repeats of what Duane
used to do. Everyone thinks those are
new, they're the oldest tricks around.
What tricks are you learning now?
I tried a varial McTwist yesterday.
I almost landed on my head. But I
tried it again and almost made it.
What's the hardest trick you ever
learned?
118
What's your favorite music?
I like punk rock. I like 7 Seconds
a lot. I like Led Zeppelin a lot, that's
not punk rock but I that's one of my
favorite bands. I like AC/DC a lot.
So what was the girl like that pop-
ped your cherry?
Man, you are the worst. I'm going
to stop doing this right now.
Just this last question.
Man, you can't be asking me these
questions.
Why not?
Because if my mom gets ahold of
this she's going to kill me. Turn this
thing off. I'm out of here.
TOM KNOX
(From page 71) I can go. On vert I like
doing alley-oop airs or nosebones.
Smith grinds are pretty fun too, vert
and street.
If you had to choose between
street, vert, pools, whatever, what
would you pick?
Streetstyle, because you can do it.
anywhere, anytime. I got into it here
because if I wanted to skate I had to
skate street since there were no
ramps. Ramps are fun, though; I
skate them almost every day.
What's your favorite skate spot?
Definitely the McDonald's banks
in Bakersfield. It's a bank to harsh
curb. It's lighted and in an alley. You
can skate it whenever you want. Con-
crete curb and slick bank.
Any message for the readers?
Keep skating. Skate for fun. Never
quit because if you quit you're lame.
You shouldn't quit because you're
not into skateboarding just to be cool,
you've got to be into it because you
like it. That's about all. B
ICE-T
(From page 93)
Now are you trying to show peo-
ple who are involved in crime that
they don't have to be?
Yeah. I figure this: I was so far to
that side and I'm so far the other way
now, that means anybody can come
back from a criminal life. Even the
most hardcore gang member. He
can never quit. Well, I can take him
out on tour, take him someplace else,
move him up to a nice house
someplace, and he won't be bang-
ing any more. Nobody would. You
become a victim of circumstance,
you get stuck in one situation. All my
friends are moving out now. I'm mov-
ing people to Hollywood, the Valley.
It's not safe. All they have to do is get
a job, I'm not paying their rent. We're
trying to get everybody on a positive
wavelength. Of course, many groups
are just out to outdo each other. It's
like rock and roll. A lot of heavy metal
bands are friends and a lot of them
aren't. It's competitive. It's a capitalist
system and capitalism says compete.
I just ain't with that.
Is capitalism a good system?
It's a good system, but in order to
keep it running, you've got to have
rich people, middle class and lower
class. The only way to guarantee you
have a lower class is to keep some-
body high, uneducated, off-balance
and less-informed. There is definitely
a force that's attempting to keep a
lower class. That's why if you go to
my neighborhood, there's a liquor
store on every corner. It's zoning-
the laws set things up like that. Go
to Beverly Hills and try to open a
liquor store. It'll never happen. There
has to be a ghetto in every city.
Capitalists need someone to look
down on, otherwise they don't know
how high they are. If everybody went
around in Rolls Royces, it wouldn't
be any fun. It's a vicious system.
Are systems like socialism and
communism any better?
I don't know. Capitalism isn't
necessarily the wrong system, but it
breeds a way of saying, 'I have to be
better than you and my house has
to be bigger in order for me to feel
good. You start off as a kid learning
that. Babies are born with no values,
nothing. It's all taught. It's a foul
system, but we're in it. True capitalists
are vicious-they will kill you. That's
all drug dealers are. They say, "The
end justifies the means and I don't
care what I have to do to get it."
Do you think that human nature is
inherently vicious?
I don't think human nature is
anything. The only thing that's
human nature is sex. A baby will get
pretty vicious if you try to take his rat
tle, but that's not hate, that's just an
instinctive need. You have to teach
kids to share. Unfortunately, all that
other bull is taught too. I remember
when I first found out I was black. I
used to have a white buddy named
Mark Richards, and his mother would
never let me into the house. I could
only play in the front yard. His other
buddies would come over and they
could go in. I went home and asked
my mother and she said, "Well,
you're colored and he's white.' I said,
What does that mean?" and she
said, "You'll learn. One time I had
another white friend and I had a bud-
dy who was darker than me. They let
me come over to his house, but
Kenneth, my darker buddy, couldn't
come. They said, "No, we have too
many friends over. But on the way
there, another couple of his buddies
hooked up. I said, 'I thought you
couldn't have any more friends.' He
said, 'Oh, I can have anybody over
I want. "But what about Kenneth?"
'Oh he's a darkie..I was learning.
Why do you come to the shooting
range?
Shooting guns is a sport. It's
something you can aim at a piece of
paper-a game. I'm not going to
shoot at anybody. It's like throwing
a ball, except it makes a big noise.
I think women should learn about
them, and kids too. Otherwise some
kid will go in his father's drawer and,
boom! Know about them and don't
be afraid of them. If you have a gun
in your house and some fool is out-
side getting ready to rape your wife,
if she's shot the gun before, she's go
ing lay it on him when he comes
through the door. He's going to die,
not her. It's unfortunate we have to
protect ourselves, but the world is
screwed up. People say, 'Oh why
don't you take that gun from around
your neck and wear a daisy or
something. I'll wear that when cops
start carrying bouquets of flowers.
The world isn't like that.
Where will you go when you die?
Skateboard heaven. No, I don't
care really. I'm not a religious person.
My attitude is, if I go to hell to burn
I'll get used to it, and if I go to heaven,
I couldn't keep it clean. I'm not worry-
ing about that. When I die, I'm
dead-toss a coin. My attitude is that
heaven and hell are right here and
when you die you're dead. I've
always had to overcome, improvise
and handle shit. I don't pray.
Do you believe in God?
I believe in something. I believe in
cause and effect. If you do wrong to
people, bad things will happen to
you. If you do good to people, good
things will happen to you. But either.
way you'll still die. Why take life so
seriously, you can't get out alive. The
thing about dying is that you want to
make sure the people you leave
behind are all right. I wouldn't want
to leave my kid in debt. I have a life
insurance policy. Once I'm dead,
what do I have to worry about? Y'all
have to worry about bills and rent-
I'm dead...
