(From pege 49) off, the raging didn't
slow down. Tribal sounds and
choruses were still moving an excited
crowd of Brazilian, Italian, English,
American, French, German and
gypsy madmen into primitive dances
Finally, they managed to clear the
pub. Outside Ron Allen, Andy
Howell, Pat Ngoho and other loud-
mouths were rapping and no one
wanted to leave. Soon someone
disappeared with a big German girl,
someone else stopped a taxi and
someone just sat down to watch
others skate their heads off.

(From page 5) and allie blunts. A lot of
the younger kids are into that type
of skating but now they're progress
ing back toward the ramp. They've
gotten good on the mini-ramps and
now they're thinking, 'Okay, I'll take
this one stage further. I'll take this to
the big ramp I think that's great. It
gets back into the heart of what I
think skating is-progression and
getting vertical. On a sad but related
note, we may have lost the Latimer
Road ramp. They might change their
minds, but, if not, we'll just progress
like we've always done. We'll go for
something new, build something.
hustle the council and get a sports
grant out of them.
"Skateboarding is getting bigger
and bigger in Europe all the time. It's
becoming big like it was ten years
ago, but it's more respected now
because people can actually skate
well. The public doesn't look down
on it so much.
"The London scene is a bit un-
together at the moment. It's like a
jigsaw puzzle. The sense of unity is
weak because there are a lot of kids
doing their own thing. When times
get desperate, which we hope they
never will again, we's all fall back
together down at South Bank and
reform the old team. There will be
that extra-large handful who tough it
out and stick around.
A lot of people are getting
educated in the real ways of
skateboarding and, if they don't fit in
with that pattern, shine em'. We're
kind of in a recruitment stage for the
next era of skateboarding. At some
point, I'm sure those who aren't that
serious will walk away from skate-
boarding and go play frisbee or yo-
yos or whatever.
"The biggest problem in skating
around London that I see right now
is that we have a lot of former BMXers
into it. They have sketchy attitudes
and they bring all their friends into
it. We just don't want to know them.
"There are a hell of a lot of skaters
now, and basically everyone will go
anywhere to check something out or
do something new. It's not lika, "My
area, my scene! You'll be skating a
spot and you'll see the friends you
mot 20 miles north or east three days
ago. And you don't say. "Hey what are
you doing here? It's just natural that
they are there.
"Lots of people have cars now. It's
trendy to drive and to be a fashion
victim out with your mates. It's acid
house, basically. In London, we don't
drive. We take the tube, the bus, the
train and skate in between spots. It
we didn't have the underground, I
don't know how I would ever get to
skate during the week!"
So that's the story, old and new.
In parting, here are a couple of
Shane's favorite London tales
"Chris Charalambous was skating
on the tube platform when he
sketched and fell. He landed with
both feet on the live rail (10,000 volts).
but the spring in his Vans ejected him
straight back to the platform.
"Billy Ruff came to town in 1983
and couldn't ring anyone, so he
ended up sleeping at the Bank with
the bums."
Mike John adds one last anecdote
to summarize and lay it to rest so we
could continue pounding pints of
Lager: "You can't just take one per-
son's word for any part of London.
You've got to come with an open
mind and ask as many people as
possible. I can tell you about Mean
while because it's where I learned to
skate. It was like a giant Alba Bevel,
a ditch with canyon in the middle, a
grindable lip and a rollout lip. I used
to skate there with Dean Bennett.
Chris Shalambis, Floyd, Bricky and
this little kid called Bod. One day this
guy named Graham Maddonna said
to me while we were watching Bod,
'That kid's gonna be hot some day'
I said, 'Him? I can skate better than
him. Little did I know"
