a criminal offense. Why? Because
I am chipping benches, cement, etc.
He pointed this out to me (as if I
didn't already know it was there). He
didn't give me much of an answer
when I pointed to the fifty or so
cigarette butts just below the ledge
I had destroyed and asked why
cigarettes weren't illegal on campus
also. I guess we should all drive cars
more and do more severe (but not
visible) damage to our planet and
the ozone layer. My skating damage
is insignificant compared to that.

it for about three weeks, have shot
20 hours of VHS footage and have
yet to see a cop. Skating is no crime
here (yet) and the pool is no bust.

One day my brother was
nice enough to fix up a skate
for me, but I let it sit under my
bed for over a year before 1
got enough guts to ride it.
Since it didn't roll fast on flat
land, I figured, "It will not go that fast
downhill." Well, I was wrong. I
slammed hard. Ever since that day
I decided that I could never feel
worse. So now I skate, well try to,
anyway. I'm not great, but I've in-
vented some pretty cool moves, like
"grind to the bone." That is exactly
what I've done to fingers, knees,
elbows. I wanted to tell all the other
girls who read this mag and skate:
girls will be treated like they know
how to skate some time, even if it is
in a thousand years, and by then we
will be better than the guys. Hal

I would just like to pay my
respects to the kid that died while
skating that drainage ditch in Albu-
querque, NM. I consider all skaters
to be a part of one big family, and
the loss of any skater is a great loss
to us all. I hope his last session was
a good one.

POOL DAZE
I'm 22 and my friend Tom is 19.
We crave pools. The only problem
is there aren't many pools here in
our neck of the woods. Although we
love to skate anything, pools are our
greatest desire. The other day we
were cruising down the highway
when I saw what appeared to be an
abandoned hotel. Hotel meant pool,
so we investigated. What a discov
ery! We saw a pool 40 feet long, dog
legging to the right down into a 10%
foot deep bowl with at least
four feet of vert. I went to the
front of the hotel and found
the owner. They were open
but I didn't care. I wanted
that pool. After throwing a
line or two about "my part-
ner and I want to shoot some
film in your pool for a skate
video, I told her we would also like
to clean the pool and its outlying
area if she would let us. I showed her
the August '89 issue of Thrasher
with "100 pools." She was stoked.
We told her no one but us would
know about it. We've been skating
I would like to bring to the atten
tion of my fellow skaters and
Thrasher mag readers that Billa-
bong, Local Motion, Quicksilver and
other such stickers are not meant for
Nissan and Toyota trucks. These
truck owners have somehow gotten
the impression that it is stylish or a
"fad" or something to do. Please
ask your sponsors to make stickers
for these boners that say, "I am a
Yuppie" or "Skateboard?" or "My
Dad Bought the Truck for Me" or
something that will draw their atten-
tion away from stickers that were
obviously made for skateboards,
guitars and stop signs on El Camino
Real (in San Mateo, of course). Also,
it's nice to see that your mag makes
it to Fulda, West Germany.

In the August issue you informed
us all that 69 girls wrote in "I'm a girl
and I skate. I was shocked. Why
would they do this? They are acting
like they are three years old. If you're
a good skater, you don't brag or
flaunt. I just wanted to give you peo-
ple at Thrasher a different kind of let-
ter...a pure, truthful one. I'm a
cross between a boy and a girl. Yes,
I'm both. I want no special treatment
but to be treated like all the other
| thrashers. I'm very lucky to have a
circle of friends who are damn good
skaters and accept me. Thanks for
the time and understanding.
