ADORES HARDCORES
This letter is for you long-time
hardcores who say that the new
generation of skaters is a bunch of
wannabe fad-crazy ten-year-olds.
I'm 15 years old and I started skating
in 1984. For the first three years
skated by myself, knowing nothing
of halfpipes, launch ramps,
McTwists or ollie kickflips. I grew up
carving and grinding, actually enjoy
ing myself. Then it happened-
read my first skateboard magazine.
I was amazed to actually see pic-
tures of people soaring through the
air on skateboards! The next year!
transferred to a public school and
met some so-called "real skaters."
Anyways, now I look back and wish
I could have stayed in my own
seventies world. I get hassled a lot
because I'd rather skate a curb than
a launch ramp; I'd rather skate ten
miles to session a crummy ditch with
no transitions than watch the new
videos. This just goes to say that I,
a member of the new generation of
skaters, respect the older hardcores
(Alva, Peralta, the Albas, Peters.
LSF
etc.). Keep shredding!

RUDE LITTLE DUDES
I just got back from a pro demo.
The skating was phenomenal and I
had a great time. The one thing that
totally irked me was seeing how
lame and disrespectful some of the
kids were to the pros. Chris Miller
was sitting on the platform of the
mini-ramp and kids were kneeing
him in the back trying get auto-
graphs. One kid jammed his board
into the back of Miller's head trying
to get the next autograph. Miller
looked up at me and said, "Man, I
really feel sorry for these kids." I told
him how much I respected his
skating as well as his patience,
shook his hand, and left thinking.
"Boy, these kids don't know what's
going on." This leads me to suggest
you do an article on skater fan eti-
quette. Have pros tell what they
appreciate and how they like to be
treated at demos.

JUST SAY PRO
I really didn't want to write this let-
ter, but my conscience got the best
of me. About three months ago I at-
tended an extremely popular skate
contest on the East Coast. This
wasn't my first. I always enjoy them,
but something really hit me that hurt:
I saw some pros (no names) getting
drugs. One pro gave his board away
for
a bag of pot while others wasted
away in their motel rooms. I really
wouldn't have cared except that I
sometimes look up to these guys for
their incredible athletic ability. It
hurts me to see such good athletes
waste what they have on something
that is only momentary pleasure.
Besides, what if some kid who idol-
ized the pro or pros saw them doing
this? Not only would it be a let-down,
but maybe later if the kid was offered
pot or some other drug, he might be
more inclined to do it because his
idols do. It's sad and scary. I don't
expect any pros to change how they
are, but I hope that at least some of
you will think about this next time
some little kid cheers for you at a
contest.

Most kids are smarter than the dumb-
est pros. Just as likely the kid would
think the pro was an idiot and forget
about it. T-ed
GROUND RULES
I've been skating for about a year
and a half and there is something I
don't understand. How come when
you get in an argument with your
mom, she always grounds you when
you start to win?

LIFE'S A DITCH
We had a dream. We dug a hole.
We lined it with cement. It sucked.
We sucked. We gave up. We forgot
about it. Time passed. I went back.
I cleaned it up. It didn't suck as
much. I didn't suck as much. I had
fun. I learned. I have good memories
of our baby. She wasn't much,
basically an overgrown bathtub (not
that much overgrown), but she was
ours. We had many names for her:
the ditch, the dustbowl, the sequel
(we stopped work over winter), and
