Recently, three crack units of elite
concrete commandos struck a fierce blow for the skateboard revolution. These
brave lads launched risky aerial recon missions over three separate urban centers
in the western United States. More amazing than the success of their endeavors
was the fact that the crews had no knowledge of each other's plans. Here are
the photographic fruits of the forays (Michael Blanchard shooting with Randy
Katen spotting in NorCal, Chris Ortiz with Steve Alba in SoCal, Mike Cornelius
with Brian Brannon in Arizona) and a written report by Brian Brannon.
The high-winged single-engined
Cessna 150 taxied down a private runway. "This is S-K Eight Six-
Niner requesting permission to depart Greeny Field. Over."
"This is Tower, Six-Niner, get to it. You are cleared. Over."
"Roger. Six-Niner."
The pilot brought the engine to roar and the plane to bore. The
propeller thumped into the wind while the wings rocked time. Cranked even
higher, the little Cessna rolled intently on down the runway. Within a few.
moments, Six-Niner was airborne, just another small bird, ascending into a
wide expanse of sky, with bearings as yet undisclosed.
Inside sat three alert skaters, mission underway. Their objective: empty
pool reconnaissance. With adequate funds and licensed friend, they were
ready to perform a bird's-eye search for prime abandoned real estate.
They immediately viewed a multitude of pools which, alas, sat lived-in and
full. Leveling out at 500 feet, they could see the avenues and streets clearly.
