"What's really important to me, when you're riding a ramp or whatever, is that you use the whole thing."
really, not right away at least. Even on the
half-pipe run at Cherry Hill we worked the
whole thing. What's really important to me,
when you're riding a ramp or whatever, is that
you use the whole thing, work the kinks, use
the extensions, use whatever's available.
Your dad used to drive you and other
people all over to skate spots. In fact, one
of his photos got you on the cover of
Thrasher. Tell us about your relationship
with your family.
My dad has always been instrumental in
my whole skate deal. My friends and I had
no way to get to the park, so he volunteered.
He was always cool about it. He took us to
Ohio a few times and to California. After work
he would drive us for an hour and sit around
for four or five hours and then drive home.
He didn't care. He always took photos to
document our progress, and that's important.
Movies help most. My little brother and sister
skate for fun, and my girlfriend is real
understanding. She's my best friend. My
mom, well, I don't know what she thinks.
What about school and finishing it?
Everybody should finish high school. As
for college, I lasted half a semester, couldn't
deal, had to skate.

Do you think California pros are threat
ened by pros outside of the sunbelt?
not like we're out to get them or anything.
I don't know. They might be a little bit. It's
We're just back here with no magazines, no
companies, no hype (don't believe the hype)
and crappy weather. We skate because we
like to. We don't skate because it's a novelty
or because it's hip. Things are not handed
to us here like they seem to be there. We have
to shovel ramps and deal with bad weather.
We work to skate and we appreciate what we
have. I like it back here better because it's
not as big on a fad level. It's big but it's on
an underground level. We can have a pool
and not have it graffitied in a week, and we
can skate the pool for longer because there
are not a million people going there to make
it obvious or make it a bust. We're not wor-
ried about catching up to those guys. I don't
think there's any catching up to do nowadays.
Outside of this area, who do you like to
skate with and why?
I'll skate with anybody, but I don't like com-
petitive attitudes, like jock skateboarders. If
it comes down to a contest type attitude trip,
I'll just sit down, let those guys go for it and
I'll skate when no one's around. I'm not into
that type of situation. As for favorites, I like
to skate with Dan Wilkes and Jeff Phillips
because they're my friends. And as for style,
Reese, Lance and Cab are the people I really
like to watch.
Which skaters do you not like and why
don't you like them? You can give names,
it's all right.
(laughs) I don't want to give you names.
They know who they are; the people who kiss
bootie for coverage, and the people battling
to be better than the next guy, to get applause
from the crowd. I don't skate for the crowd,
I skate for myself. I turned pro to skate with
better skaters and to progress in my own
skateboarding. I like to go to contests and
skate with people I haven't seen in a while.
Some people have very competitive atti-
tudes. At this one contest I overheard some-
one on our team asking the head judge,
"How did Groholski get in the cut, and not
me?" That made me laugh so hard. I'm just
out to have fun, do my own thing and
progress in my own direction. I don't care
about learning all these top forty tricks, like
Madonna's and junk. I want to make up my
own stuff, have fun and skate with no expec-
tations placed on my head. I think the readers
already know who the suckers are, they can
read between the lines too. (Continued on page 96)
