Terror Titans:
Settle The Gore Score
by Marc Shapiro
Look out terrornauts! It's time for the
ultimate slasher shoot out-the sadistic man
of your dreams versus the gurgling, hockey-
masked killing machine. It's Friday The 13th:
Part VIII opening on August 4 and A
Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child,
which opens August 11. Is this the box office
tussle horror nuts have been hoping for?
"I don't fear Jason," says Robert Englund
during an early morning transformation into.
Freddy Krueger on the Nightmare 5 set. "Let
him take Manhattan. I know how good this
film is going to be, so I welcome the com
petition. The only reason (Friday the 13th)
Part VII did so well was that they had John
Buechler as a director and Lar Park Lincoln
as the star. The only reason they're making
Part VIII is that they got lucky with Part VII."
"Personally, I think Jason can kick Fred-
dy's ass," crows Kane Hodder, who plays
Jason in the new Friday the 13th film.
We'll have to wait on that bout, but in the
real world Freddy outgunned Jason in last
year's "gimme your money" sweepstakes.
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream
Warrior took in $50 million in its theatrical run.

profitable, lagged behind
at $19 million.
A Nightmare on Elm
Street 5: The Dream Child,
directed by Stephen
Hopkins and written by
Jack Barstow, is a sequel
of sorts to Nightmare 4.
Alice (Lisa Wilcox), who
kicked Freddy's ass in the
last film, is back and preg
nant. Old razor fingers, still
weak from his beating,
needs to find new access
to the living world. He at
tempts to do so by invading the dreams of
Alice's still unborn child and ultimately by em-
bodying Alice's baby when it is born.
In typical Nightmare fashion, a literal ar-
my of special effects people, including Chris
Biggs, Alan Monroe and David Miller (who
created the Freddy makeup in the first
Nightmare film), pave the way for crazed vi-
sions in the Elm Street world.
Things are a bit more sketchy in Friday The
13th: Part Vill. We know the film is scripted
and directed by Rob Hedden. Actor/stuntman
Kane Hodder, who played Jason in Part VII,
is now the first actor to play Jason for a se-
cond time. Supposedly, Jason has finally
found his way out of Camp Crystal Lake and
after terrorizing (maybe tenderizing is a bet-
ter word) some folks on the high seas, ends
up in the big city.
"Friday VIII is a different kind of film than
the previous Friday movies," says Frank
Mancuso, Jr., director of the latest, which was
filmed in Vancouver and New York City. "It's
allowed us to move into a different world. It
will definitely be scarier and, because we've
moved Jason to a different locale, we'll be
able to do things we haven't done before."
"You're definitely going to see a different
Jason," says Hodder. "Jason in Part Eight
is much smarter and less of a lumbering.
zombie. Now he thinks about things before
he does them, which I believe makes him
even more scary."
But the question remains, have Friday The
13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street sequels.
bludgeoned their audiences into submission
or will people want more of this stuff into the
year 2000?
"This is a business," says Manusco, "and
these movies will continue to be made as
long as they continue to make money. But
I guess, at a certain point we'll all have to
hang up our machetes forever"
VIDEO CHOPPING LIST
Dark Tower (Forum Video)
A demon takes up residence in a
highrise office building. A bunch of people
spend a lot of time trying to evict it.
Raising the rent probably would have
saved a lot of wear and tear.
Tromas' War (Media Video)
From the people who gave you The
Toxic Avenger comes a blood-splattered.
little tale of tourists fighing off terrorists.
A lot of guts but not a whole lot of glory.
Released in two versions, R and unrated.
Twisted Nightmare (TWE Video)
A group of seven couples run afoul of
the spirit of a dead retarded kid at a place
called Camp Paradise. Have you had your
slasher quotient filled for the month?
Slime City (Camp Video)
The title alone sounds like it's worth at
look, but for those of you who can't live
without details, this very low budget flick
is about possession in New York City.
Bad Taste (Magnum Video)
Word along the video wire is that this
may be the most disgusting, over the top
splatter epic in ages. Aliens eat human
brains. This New Zealand film couldn't
even get a rating in its home town. May
be hard to find, but go for it!
