HAWAII
(From page 42) biggest mokes the Guin-
ness book has ever seen. Then you
get a guy like Jeff Phillips up in the
structure screaming, "Bloody hell!"
He ran and jumped, with his board,
across the gap, landed and rode
away Or can you believe this? Mark
Gonzales ollied the twelve-foot gap.
finally making it after several tries.
There Is A Contest, But First It Is
Necessary To Locate Military An-
tiques And Authentic Handmade
Silk Hawaiian Shirts.
Of course, every contest has its
beginning and its end. Well, this con-
test began before any spectators
were allowed in, making all the cuts
in a preliminary way and saving the
top showdown for last (but not least).
Judging for this most prestigious of
events were Joel Gomez, Moblow, D
Duncan, Keith Meek and Grant
Fukuda. The only skaters to make it
to the eight cut, and it wasn't any
easy task, were Ben Schroeder,
Danny Way, Steve Caballero, Christ-
ian Hosoi, Eric Dressen, Tony Hawk.
Mark Gonzales and Micke Alba.
On the first runs of the finals, the
rider went something like this: Micke
Alba's run was highlighted by a
rollout 360° hang-up to Smith and
360° grinds. Schroeder bailed right
off, then did a Smith-to-takie transfer.
Dressen did a stale air fakie method.
lien 360° and a backside grind to air
fakie in The Gonz exocuted a front-
side ollie-to-grab, frontside ollie axle
pivots and no-handed blunts.
Caballero's 360° air over the spine
set him apart from the rest. Danny
Way bailed at first but came back
with a 360° one-foot over and ollie
air-to-fakie. Tony Hawk tail stalled to
a rock and roll fakie in and a 180°-to-
no-handed blunt. As for Christian, Mr.
Air Show, he belied the transobvious
and made air flight look like under-
water ballet.
On the next runs, Micke didn't fare
so well, bailing big time. Schroeder
spun some reverts but bailed also.
Gonz's ollie grab method stood out
in this run. Caballero's high speed
and adaptability to any terrain was
evident with his frontside grind-to-
takie overs and backside airwalk.
The guy to watch, Danny Way, bailed
after two tricks and lost his whole
edge. Hawk totally bailed; it just
wasn't his day. Christian came on
strong with a judo, slide-n-roll, front-
side ollies-to-boardslides over and a
judo over. The capacity crowd was
on its tiptoes and roaring at all of
these extraordinary inhuman feats.
It came down to the last runs of the
day and everyone in the stands had
their absolute favorites Micke Alba
went first. He pulled an air-to-tail over
the spine, then throttled into a 360°
re-entry, but bailed on a frontside
360° rock and roll. Next was Ben
Schroeder who had a big air opening
into a backside and a lien. He bailed
on a nosepick transfer, hopped back
on and then bailed again. Flailing in
next was Eric Dressen, who wailed
a frontside fakie over the spine, some
raging air-to-tails, then bailed on a
bold 360° ollie Gonz maintained the
ultimate defiant attitude. He did a big
ole to frontside grab, rock and roll
slides, no-handed blunts and even
made the twelve-foot channel olle on
his second try the trick of the day
by far. But Cab's last run was fast.
clean and calculated, with smooth
slide-n-rolls, Smith grind transfers
and takie methods. It was a near-
perfect run without a single bail. After
Cab came Danny Way, who soared
into a no-handed fakie, a 540° over
the spine but missed his olie varial
catch and bailed a McTwist
The big arena was pressurized as
it narrowed down to the last two
riders, and the final two runs of the
contest. We had Tony Hawk and
Christian Hosoi remaining, two of the
biggest names in these circles. They
both have plenty of competition ex-
perience and they both know how to
save the best for last. Hawk began
with a tail-to-revert hang up, then a
360° over the spine, mixing in some
of the highest and most casual look
ing allies of the day. Christian was
next. As the roar of the crowd inten-
sified. Christian rocketed some
intensified frontside glider allie airs,
but then bailed on a backside air
It was all anti-climactic from there.
When it came time to announce
the victors, many were holding their
breath while others chanted for their
favorites. Micke Alba came through
with fourth, keeping him in the win-
ner's bracket for yet another contest.
Third place went to Mr. Hosoi, who,
if it weren't for that unfortunate slip
up on his last run, could have done
a notch or two better. Mr. Wonder, Eric
Dressen, pillaged the number two
spot simply for the reason that he's
one insane terrain ripper. Steve
Caballero, with his professional at-
titude, endurance and strategy.
proved that all of that can really pay
off if you have the desire to win.
Pink Cadillac-17 Rounds of
Tequila-Party Till You Drop
The local disco establishment, the
Pink Cadillac, hosted a festive ultra-
rockin' hoedown after the contest.
Many of those involved actually
bathed before attending, though
others didn't. Reese Simpson was
the sidewalk entertainment. Things
got fairly uncomfortable, so it was
back to the Ala Moana, where a
handful of the neck men tried to
throw a four-square ball off my
balcony and make it land in the swim
ming pool thirty floors below. Nobody
made it in, even after twelve tries, so
Cockneck chucked a bottle and hit
the pool dead square.
Looking back on the whole event.
this was probably the most fun and
smoothest running NSA competition
to date. I'm sure it's a sign of things
to come-the next one should be
even better
