As your faithful product man, I try
to cover every aspect of the skate
gear market in this column. Unfor-
tunately, when a company or a skater
sends something to me. I can't.
always put it in the next issue. With
so much merchandise on hand it
may take a while for your product to
get "patrolled" Be patient and even-
tually I will get around to it. Thank you
all for taking the time to send us your
products
This month's complete deck is a
Walker Chris Baucom (Street) with
Tracker Extracks and Tracker's ad-
dition to the wheel market, the Ole
95A x 63mm. At first glance the
Walker deck looks unusual because
it comes with what look like graphics
on the top. Upon closer inspection
I found that it is some kind of sticker
under clear grip tape. The board is
a little on the small side, but the wood
is strong and it features a simple
smooth concave. While most com-
panies are opting for "kick nose"
design, this Walker deck is more
scooped than kicked. The shape is
pretty basic: 29½" x 9" with 3%
of nose and a surprisingly short 5*
tail. I have yet to see anyone ride a
Walker board in my town. Perhaps
they should step up their distribution
on the West Coast. Write to Walker

The trucks-well the name speaks
for itself. It seems that the skate world
is divided into two factions; Indy and
Tracker. Tracker has been making
strong stable trucks for a long time
and it shows. They worked well on
this board because they were the
right size for the deck and wheel
combo. Last month I was wondering
why Tracker axles are kind of long.
but I think I've figured it out they
want to make it easier to install the
coper system. The thing to remem-
ber about all new trucks is that the
bushings are new and will take a
while to get worked in. Advice:
Tracker hard bushings for the speed
merchants and soft ones for all the
street princes.
Tracker has added its name to a
long list of companies that try to
make everything wheels, trucks
and decks. Let me name but a few.
Magnum, Variflex, and most recently
Madrid. Most of these companies
spread themselves so thin the overall
quality of their merchandise goes
down. Tracker's Ollie wheel has all
the packaging of a good wheel
(shape and graphics), but I feel that
this isn't the best they can do. They
are smooth, but they are not as fast
as I had hoped. They ride like Toxic
and Blockhead wheels.
In my efforts to keep abreast of all
types of skating, I came across the
Tracker Jean Marc freestyle dock.
I'm not exactly a freestyle expert, so
I just give you the basics-numbers
and such. 274" x 7" with 4% of
nose, a 5 tail and a 12" wheelbase.
One question I have-maybe some
one out there could tell me is, "Why
are most freestyle decks flat?" In any
case, it is a cute little board.
I am pleased to say that Tracker
sent a sample of everything they
make, including the Tracker 34. First
off, let me say that it looks a lot like
a Red Dog from Dogtown. The wood
is almost identical, and the shape is
pretty close. The concave is slight but
inconsistent, with a large, flat section
in the middle. The tail is similar to the
Dogtown in that it kicks up another
half-inch at the end. The measure-
ments are 34" long, 10%" wide, with
4" of nose, 7" of tail and a very stable
18% wheelbase. Overall, I'd say this
board is a little on the heavy side, but
it's still a good cruiser-durable,
functional and rideable. More on
Tracker decks in later issues. Tracker

I've saved the best for last-my
new large Santa Cruz Jeff Grosso.
This is the third month in a row that
I have showcased Santa Cruz decks,
and they keep getting better. This is
one of the most functional wide
boards I have seen in a long time. I
set this one up, and it felt like I was
on a groovy LSD trip for the mind as
well as the body. Being a bigger per-
son, I found that the 31%" length is
ideal for street as well as ramp/pool.
I urge all you bronco bustin' burly
folks to go down to your local shop
and look into these new Santa Cruz
decks. They're a real deal. Oh yeah,
it's 10% wide, with a 4" nose, a 6%"
double kicktail and one of the
sweetest 15 wheelbases in town.

In my trinket department I have
looked into that ever important ele-
ment of your load, the riser pad.
Tracker sent up their new angled
riser system. Well, if you will all think
back about eleven years ago, you
may remember the Rad Pad. The
Rad Pad's gimmick was that it was
supposed to add stability by angling
your trucks. Well, if you asked me,
I'd say it was a bunch of bull. But hey.
anything to make a sale, huh? Old
ideas mean new money.
Well, that is another sampling of
the wonderful world of skate
paraphernalia. I hope it made sense
to someone out there. Remember,
when shopping for skateboard pro-
ducts, the idea is to look before you
leap. Don't spend until you are sure.
And the most important thing: if you
ever go to a shop and get the pres-
sure sell, leave and don't come back.
They should be in it for skating, not
for the cash. Well, thanks for any cor-
respondence. Write to: Jake Phelps.
