of Camp Roberts, we espied two large farm boys
with skates in front of the general store. After ex-
changing greetings and a quick photo shoot (one
guy had an Alf model) we hit 'em with the standard
"Ahem, so you guys got any pools?" At first they
didn't understand what we wanted with an empty
pool. Nevertheless, the biggest of the two piped
up with, "Yeah, there's one right down that road
over there." Blackhart punched our rented
passenger van in the direction of the kids' point-
ing finger. We passed the road initially, so Dr. Rick
decided to show off his driving skills by popping
it in reverse and backing down the road towards
the pool. Well...Ricky saw the telephone pole, but
he didn't see the guide cable attached to it. When
he hit the sucker, it flexed the pole in such a man-
ner that it nearly ripped the phone lines clear off
a row of houses down the quiet lane. Simultan-
eously, two large cokes from Taco Bell, both
camera bodies and an assortment of lenses that
were perched for action between the front seats
launched all over this reporter. Forgetting entirely
about the pool, we limped out of town with
Cochrane and Guerrero laughing violently in the
other car, which we had showered with burritos
at eighty miles per hour only half an hour earlier.
