TONY HAWK
(From page 10)
What was your worst injury?
Probably knocking out my teeth in
the Del Mar half-pipe and getting
knocked out at the same time. I woke
up partly in the pro shop and then
I woke up in the hospital. That was
real scary. Getting knocked out is one
of the worst feelings. Waking up and
not being able to remember things
that have happened in the past week.
Other than that, this thing I have now,
problems with my knee, is scaring
the hell out of me. I used to compress
too hard on certain tricks and there'd
be a bone that would come out or
move or I don't know. I could feel it
and I'd just shake it, kick it and it was
in, no problem. Then I went to Japan
and did a 720° on a little ramp. I land-
ed low and compressed so hard that
it's a real problem now. I'm going to
go see a doctor tomorrow.
What kind of changes have you
seen in skating over the years,
other than the obvious?
When I was younger, you hardly
ever saw pros. When we did, we'd
just sit there and watch them skate
and it was great, because that was
the thing. Now it's like kids almost
want to compete with you, and this
autograph thing, and free equipment
and stickers. It was never like that.
That's one of the major changes I
think, not in the skating sense but in
the way people react to us. The
fashion thing has changed a bit, it's
made a lot of kids look the same. If
they're truly skating then I think the
clothes they wear should be comfort-
able for them. If that's what they're
doing, it's fine. They're just realizing
that it's good to be into skating.
Do you have a different outlook
than you used to?
I think so. I used to try a lot of crazy
stuff when I was a kid. I never really
thought what could happen to me.
And now everything I do may seem
like something crazy to try, but I actu
ally am thinking about what could
happen and the safest way that I
should try it. I definitely have a dif
ferent outlook on tricks. The stuff
we're doing is dangerous.
How's your relationship with your
dad?
Well, it was weird in the beginning
when he started to get involved in this
kind of stuff. The whole skateboard-
ing thing was new to me and all of
a sudden my father became involved
with the big guys. I didn't really know
what to think of it. A lot of people say
a lot of things about him, but you
have to admit there aren't a whole lot
of people who could have done the
job he did and put up with all the shit
that people gave him. He and I do
have different views on a lot of stuff.
He designed and built the entire cor-
ner section on my bowl. He did all
the paperwork, all the cutting and
stuff. It was incredible. And he's up
here improving the house at least two
or three times a week-working on
the ramp or doing something in the
back yard, doing something that
needs fixing that I never even knew.
I think he definitely needed to get out
of that just for his own good. I think
he's going to enjoy just watching a
contest now. He's never been able
to watch it unbiased and appreciate
what it's about.
Do you think that the new NSA
board of directors, with the com-
panies involved, is good or bad for
the sport?
I think it's great to have the com-
panies work with them, because
they're the ones who are really going
to determine the fate of how they deal
with things. I just hope there's not a
lot of argument, non-cooperation. I
don't really know, though. I don't go
to the meetings or anything. I got a
letter about the Hawaii contest com-
ing up and it was real negative. The
wording in it was like, "You guys have
been screwing around too long and
we can't go to all the places we used
to go to because you guys screwed
it all up. The bottom line is you've got
to behave and skate. It was a
bummer. And then you have to sign
the code of conduct, which is not
something new, but the way they
worded the whole thing was weird,
saying that if we go to a contest and
screw around then a kid's going to
see that and not want to buy your
board. I was confused.
How is it dealing with non-skate
media, like Sports Illustrated?
That kind of stuff is weird because
you see your whole life open up on
a couple of pages in this national
magazine. Then someone will walk
up to you and say, "I know all about
you." A lot of stuff gets blown out of
proportion, too. I think a lot of these
guys see people looking up to the
pros in skating and they don't really
understand why so they just want to
give them a star image or something.
What they don't get is that we're just
like all other skaters and that's why
we're all skating.
Does the money motivate you to
do things?
Not for skating, no. It's something
that I never thought would last this
long and it keeps getting better, so
I don't have any expectations at all.
If I get a check tomorrow and it's not
even enough to pay the rent, well, I'l
just have to see what happens. I
definitely don't take it for granted. If
I knew I was going to make the
money I had made I would have
saved it and bought a place outright,
instead of getting a loan. That would
have been great, because that way
I would have something and it was
mine and I wouldn't have to keep
paying for it. But maybe if I had that
much money right now I wouldn't
even consider buying a house.
Any closing comments?
I guess I'd just like to say that what
happened to me could happen to
anybody, because I never thought I
had a true talent. It happened all
unexpectedly and it could happen to
you too.
