SKATEBOARDING
DUANE PETERS My desire to win skateboard competi
(From page 4) that, too much to go into
Nowadays it's like who the hell is
who? Man, I turn on MTV and it's a
joke. I don't know what it is about me,
but I look at it and I see this whole
society of joke. I'm not going to con
form to it. I've gone back to my old
punk rock ways. I don't know if it's
wrong or right, but I feel comfortable
with it. I wake up and I try to stay
angry. I feel like if you're angry you
can do anything you want to do. Any
kid out there, I don't care what age
you are, you can do what you want
to do. If you focus your mind you can
do it. If you want to win, you can win.
CABALLERO
(From page 49) portrays style. When
someone says another guy doesn't
have any style, it's not the way he's
skating, it's the way he's performing
his tricks. Kids should understand
that you need to have style to be a
good skater. You have to do tricks as
best as possible, don't just do the
trick. It's like hammering a nail into
a piece of wood. You don't just hit it
in and it's in, you hammer it all the
way down until it won't go any farther
Christian is so stylish because he
worked on performing every trick to
it's maximum. I remember Christian
would have a couple of tricks, but
he'd do them so well. Other skaters
I would have millions of tricks that
were really difficult but wouldn't do
them as perfectly. Tony Hawk looks
good and does lots of difficult tricks.
He's not as stylish as Christian, but
he pulls off difficult tricks
What are some notorious things
that have happened in skating?
I remember Dave Duncan running
after me and Christian in a St. Louis
hotel with a roman candle. We ran
up the stairs and he chased us with
the lighter in his hand, trying not to
let the flame go out. We ran down a
hall and hit a dead end where a
wedding was going on. We turned
around and there he was shooting
fireballs at us! I swear, Christian and
I were so scared. We ran into a hotel
HOSOI
(From page 60) in skateboarding forever,
like a Stacy Peralta, instead of riding
for somebody until I'm not good
enough anymore and then be a has
been. I decided that when I was
seventeen. That's what made me
really try to reach out to people. I talk
to the kids about skating and what
they think of us. I try to give them as
much satisfaction as I get. It's so they
can get inspired. Still, kids come up
to me and go, "Man, you're a fag."
They don't even know me. They think
I'm stuck up because their friend
said so.
Does a crowd scene bother you?
That's fine with me. It's actually an
adrenaline rush. You're going.
"These people are freaking on me.""

tions is gone now, but I'll never lose
my desire to be respected in a
backyard pool session.
Anyway, Duane, back to another
one of your questions-Santa Cruz.
Those guys are my buddies. I dig
everybody up there. I even sent them
all Christmas cards. I felt cheated by
what happened before, and they
know it, but you've got to learn to
forgive and forget. I'm riding for a
good company right now. They're
dedicated to skateboarding and
they've been around for ten years.
I'm proud to skate for anybody who
stands for what I stand for. As far as
a closing comment, I'm just happy
room. About five minutes later we
went outside to see if the coast was
clear and the hallway was filled by
a cloud of white dust. Someone had
run down the hall with a fire ex-
tinguisher About fifteen minutes later
we got a knock on the door and they
told us to get out. Everyone who had
anything to do with skateboarding got
kicked out. That was one of the nicest
hotels all the skaters ever stayed at.
It got trashed.
How have some of your long-time
skate peers turned out?
Mike Smith could have been a
great skater if he had the right at-
titude, the same attitude he had at
first. I think his father was really
behind him back then, and then his
father gave up on him and he's just
skating now. Tony Hawk, you know
where he stands right now. His
father's been behind him all his life.
I think that's done a lot of good for
him. It's really good when your family
is behind you, because more support
gives you more confidence. Chris-
tian's dad has always been behind
him. His dad has pushed him to be
where he's at. Steve Olson; I looked
up to that guy a long time ago. I still
look up to him. I rode for Campbell
Skatepark team, sponsored by Santa
Cruz, and John Hutson was our
trainer. He brought Olson over and
we were amazed. Back then if we
saw a pro we didn't go up to him and
ask him for an autograph or stickers
It gives you that extra boost of energy.
Pressure can either make you or
break you. You either rip your hardest
or fall every time. I'm nervous every
time I go in contests.
Do you ever get any time with
yourself or do you tend to surround
yourself with people?
I like people around. I don't want
to be a loner. I like to have people to
talk to. I like to always be doing.
something, either going somewhere,
playing a game, going out to eat, to
the beach, watching the sunset-
whatever it is. That's my free time.
My working time is travelling. It's fun
work, but it's hard on your body.
You've got to keep in shape, eat right,
keep your mental awareness and at-
tend to business. I use the pressure
as a leverage on life. It's something
that my knee is still working. I still get
injured, but I don't think I'll ever quit
skating. I hope to God I'm alive when
I'm forty. Never thought I'd make it
to 27. If I make it to 40 I guarantee
I'll still be grinding. I hope I'm an in-
spiration to people who are trying to
quit drugs, alcohol or anything. I've
seen about everything on the street
that you could imagine and I'm just
trying to say that skateboarding is the
best alternative in the world. It's bet-
ter than when you say, "Hey, man,
meet you behind the church at 3:30,
let's brawl." Hey, I'll meet you at the
backyard pool. Let's see who can do
the gnarliest edger. It's such a bet-
ter gig. It's such a better way of show-
We just sat there in awe. Nowadays
a kid will go up to you and start.
rambling. It's cool to talk to them, but
some kids just start asking for stuff.
I don't really dig that.
What would you say is the worst
way for a fan to come up to a per-
son they admire, and the best way?
Well, if I admired someone I would
have someone I knew who knew
them introduce me. That's just the
way I am. I feel it's more proper
That's the way I handle things. I don't
like when they come up to you and
say, "Yeah, remember me?" and
start rambling on. I don't like it when
they come up and ask for things.
Sometimes they don't even know
who you are, just that you're a pro-
fessional skater. I don't mind ques-
tions, but when the question is, "Can
I have?" I get bummed. They're not
in a position to ask for anything.
Compare a contest today with a
contest a long time ago?
A long time ago people went to see
skating. Now they go to get an
autograph and a sticker. The skating
isn't enough for them.
You know, a lot of the companies
think the skaters are money-hungry.
I think right now they're getting paid
well. A long time ago, they weren't
getting paid what they deserved. I
risk my life out there when I'm
skating, so I think I deserve what I
get paid. I think it's more difficult to
go out there, risk your life and use
to look forward to when you get up.
I'm enjoying life to the fullest. I've
always done what I want to do.
What vertical skaters do you like
to watch?
Craig Johnson is smooth but
sketchy but on it, going balls out at
high speed and just doing it. Even
if his foot's wrong he'll do it anyway.
Tony Hawk, who I love to watch skate,
is so technical, so precise, so bal-
anced and light footed. He's getting
more powerful nowadays from
skating every day. His body twists
from one position to the other, then
he goes in backwards. I'm learning
one-footed fakie airs and going,
"Whoa!" and he's doing 360° varial
to fakie. I've never practiced any of
that. I want to learn some of that stuff.
Still, everybody's got their own style.
manship. Just don't do drugs, man.
I've checked it out and it's definitely
not the way to live. You don't want to
wake up sick every morning. Drugs
will eat you up. It took me a long time
to learn, but I feel like I've got it licked.
I don't feel sorry for myself and all
I'm going to do is continue to go on
with life. Right now I'm playing some
really great angry music. For once
I'm really having fun with my life and
everything seems to be working. I'm
proud to be part of Thrasher. I thank
you for letting me be in this
hundredth issue. I'm proud of you
guys for making it this long. You
stuck it out longer than anybody else.
Happy birthday Thrasher.
your skating ability than to sit behind
a desk and use your brain. Behind
a desk you've got to make decisions,
if
but when you're skating you do,
too-whether you should land a trick,
whether you should stay on. What
you decide you want to stay on and
you lock, hit your head and die? I
know I'm not going to be skating all
my life.
So what are you going to do
afterwards?
Hopefully stay in the industry..
Maybe be some kind of advisor.
Do skaters respect each other?
There are a lot of skaters out there
who don't have respect for other
skaters when they're sessioning.
When you're in a snake session and
you're dropping in all the time, other
people want to skate, too. If you drop
in with somebody else, or you stay
in every time, it shows that you don't
have respect for other skaters. You
just want to be out there by yourself.
I feel good if I can let someone go,
because I know that the next time I
want to drop in this person's going
to say, "Hey, go right ahead." If he
doesn't then I'm going to think he's
a total dick and I won't want to skate
with him. I don't believe the line, "I'm
just trying to have fun. I just do that
because I don't know what I'm do-
ing. I don't realize that I'm dropping
in all the time." There's a big world
out there, you know, don't get stuck
in your own little world.
How do you fit into the big picture?
The picture is big, but we're going
to make a dent. That's what we're
here for. I think all skateboarders
want to express to the public what
we're like and how we live. We're not
just here to kick ass and make a lot
of money. A lot of skaters out there
think we're like superstars. That's
why a lot of kids are going, I want to
be a superstar pro skateboarder like
Tony Hawk or Eric Dressen or the
Gonz. It looks spectacular, but if you
came into the scene and checked it
out, it's a raw situation. We're not
dealing with each other on a very
serious level. It can't be taken too
seriously because the skaters won't
let it. The skaters' attitudes tame the
manufacturers. Some companies
just do whatever (Cont. on pege 108)
