the first time. The music didn't fit into their
mold and we didn't wear the right clothes for
hardcore. One night Biscuit would wear a
dress, but the next night he would dress as
a Hell's Angel, a nuclear disaster victim, an
asylum inmate, a human Christmas tree...
get the idea? Anything to get a reaction or
prove a point. When we opened for the Go-
Gos, we went as the Stop-Stops in-you
guessed it-dresses. We even fought over
who was going to be Belinda Carlyle. On the
back of Big Boys and the Dicks: Recorded
Live at Raul's, you see us in what appear to
be KKK robes. If you look closely, you'll see
big Izod gators painted on the front-Kappa
Kappa Kappa. We were trying to piss off
racist frats. It worked. I think one of the best
and worst costumes Biscuit did was when
he poured motor oil and syrup all over
himself. That stuff was everywhere. Months
later, the equipment was still sticky! Not many
people got on stage with us that night.
That was another thing. There was no
boundary or barrier between the band and
the audience. If you weren't acting like an
asshole and knocking things over, you were
as welcome to be onstage as we were. We
were one half of the show; the audience was
the other half. No rock star bullshit, just
people having a good time-fun.
As far as any big break-up goes, it didn't
happen. Big Boys just kinda quit playing. The
last show we played was attended by the
crowd who had been supporting us all along
rather than being some big hyped "event."
There were some tensions, but mainly
everyone started getting interested in other
things. The so-called scene wasn't the big
family it had been and the newer people
coming to the shows seemed to be there just
to be entertained and seen. Time flies. At
least now some kids are starting to make
things happen for themselves again. One
thing that's very clear from this experience
is that if you want to do something, go for
it. You will never know what might happen
or how far it might take you until you take the
first step. Ask Kevin. Thrasher, 100 issues-
and to think the whole thing started from
people just wanting to put out a magazine
to reach all the friends they hadn't met yet.
Thanks, guys.
Epilogue-Life After Big Boys:
Steve, our first drummer, went on to form
Doctor's Mob.
Biscuit was in Cargo Cult.
Rey, our last drummer, was in Scratch Acid
and is now in Rapeman (Chicago).
Chris was in Poison 13 and is now in
Junkyard (L.A.)
I was in Poison 13 and now I'm in Bad
Mutha Goose and the Brothers Grimm.
Now, go start your own magazine. T.A., we
never got your old Z-Flex. We only really.
started just one riot-honest! Stacy, thanks
again for the wheels, you too, Fausto, for the
Indys. All you now-famous skaters and big
skate execs, send lots of free skate stuff to
Tim, care of Bad Mutha Goose, 1109 South
Congress, Austin, TX 78704. And Mo, now
can I finally have my lifetime subscription?

rules are made to be broken, right? Texas
was lucky. We never had a real distinct
"thrash" scene/sound that ruled. Texas hard-
core was attitude; it didn't have much to do
with music style. The attitude was: "If I'm not
fucking with you, don't fuck with me. And if
I'm bothering you because I look or act dif-
ferent, then you better think twice about your
so-called values and if I'm still bothering you,
then great, 'cause I'm here to stay and I'm
real sorry I'm ruining your vacation" (Biscuit,
My Rules photozine, 1982). The Butthole
Surfers were hardcore and didn't sound any-
thing like the Dicks, who were hardcore and
didn't sound anything like Kamikaze Refrig
erators, who were hardcore and didn't sound
anything like Really Red, etc. Individuality
was a big part of the Texas hardcore scene.
Outside of Texas a lot of people didn't know
what to think when they saw these bands for
