TALKING ED
Riggins and Thatcher take a launch break. Photo: M.Fo
Thanks are in order and a toast is well overdue. I'd like to raise a glass with all the
THRASHER readers out there on the occasion of our 100th issue. Cheers to all you
long time subscribers, a hearty welcome to the wet-behind-the-ears newcomers and
so long to the unfortunates who had their subscriptions cancelled by mom, dad or
grandma. You can come back when you're eighteen.
To the hard working, hard skating, hard rocking staff here, a heartfelt congratulations
on a job well done. It wouldn't happen without the dedication and interest that we have
here in the house. To all of our contributors, solicited or not, pro or con, your materials
have made the mag what it is.
You skaters out there, especially those who've been with us since issue numero uno,
have all played a part in THRASHER over the years via photo and story contributions,
letters, phone calls, newspaper articles, critiques, vibes and just plain shredding. We
couldn't have done it without you.
Salut.

This 100th issue is not only a milestone in itself, but the beginning of a celebration
of skateboarding that will last until our tenth anniversary issue in January of 1991. Each
mag will commemorate past, present and future events that have built the big skate picture.
A last word for you pups who are turning pages in this magazine looking for something
you'll never find (Yeah you-the downtrodden and discouraged skaterat who is constantly
harassed on street and schoolyard, outlawed from every plaza and park by officials you
don't even vote for, under the watchful eye of every teacher, parent and cop you come
across): quit bawlin'! No generation has it any easier than the next or the last. The key
to enjoyment is your spirit of adventure. There's a whole world out there and you've
got to stay on the move to enjoy even a small part of it. I've gone back to some old
skate spots and there they sit, unsessioned, unharassed-all because of a little scum
water or dirt and rocks. You've got to work for it, no matter who you are. Guys like Salba
and Alva still session more pools and prime terrain than anybody because they're not
afraid to get their hands dirty. So get out there, find a new curb, pick up a broom, stay
ahead of the cops, wipe your nose, get off your ass and find a new spot...or go ride a bike.
