Great Desert Ramp Battle, the first pro ramp
duel. Street skating busts wide open. Tony
Hawk dominates Del Mar's keyhole and the
Spring Nationals. Welinder beats Rodney
in freestyle finals. Skate comix are the rage
Stecyk's streetstyle sequentials blow minds
and upset parents all over the land. Tommy
Guerrero wins the first pro streetstyle event
as an amateur and upsets everybody. The
East Coast continues to thaw out with rip-
ping skating going down. The S.F. Jaks team
patrols the streets of the city. Joe Lopes
Ramp Jam is the first pro event of its kind.
Caballero takes the cash there and at the
Summer World Series contest at Upland.
LANCES
SKATE SESSIONS
Lance Mountain's Manor ramp is the desired session spot. Top
CASL amateurs: Stadham, Nash, Grosso, Staab and Lucero
1984
Rodney Mullen is doing the "Impossible." Schoolyards are back
in session. In Texas, the word is "Shut Up and Skate." Jeff Philips
is blowing minds. Upland hosts a Turkey Shoot and Lance
Mountain beats all comers. The St. Pete Jam brings the backyard
contest back to where it all started-Grigley's backyard. Bonnie-
Blouin skins a found bobcat carcass in her hotel room. Neil
Blender wins with Monty nolder right behind him. Craig Johnson
sweeps am honors. West Germany rages with skaters like Claus
Grabke, Martin Van Doren and Thomas Keller Skarfing Material
makes its debut. Agent Orange are at the top of the skate rock
charts. Rodney Mullen speaks when spoken to. Roskopp lakes
a board to the skull at Joe's. The three P's-pool, park and pipe-
are available to the hungry skater Nails, McClure, Talldog, Ancell
and Skipper make a skate vehicle out of mom's sedan. Mark
Rogowski wins the ill-named Skateboard Olympics at Del Mar.
The zine scene is happening big time. Tony Hawk wins again
on the right coast at the Kona ramp meet in Jacksonville. Tony
does finger-flip airs among other tricks. The NSA brings freestyle
and streetstyle back to Golden Gate Park in S.F. Lucero is hit
by a car while skating to the event. Natas Kaupas typifies the
new breed and graces the cover skating a wall in Venice. Britt
Parrot, Joe Bowers, Batmite and Doug Walker host a backyard
session in Tennessee. A Massacre at Mile High ramp is not
without incident. Billy Ruff wins again. Blender is second. Street
maneuvers are getting way out of hand. NSA actually pulls a
contest at the Venice Pavilion (freestyle only, Kevin Harris wins).
Yet another pool event at Del Mar-yes it's the Hawk Man in
first. Welcome to Lincoln, Nebraska, home of the Cornhuskers
the Midwest Melee. McGill is interviewed. The Capitola Classic
is now streetstyle and Caballero is champion. JFA chronicle their
annual cross-country tour Mike McGill's McTwist is definitely not
for everybody.
1985
The making of a skate video is well documented by masters
Peralta and Stecyk. Steve Douglas, Bod Boyle, Sean Goff and
others head up an able bodied crew from the London region.
Danny Webster, Martin Van Doren, Robby Butner and Nicki Guer
rero are also mentioned. Rodney and Caballero are in Japan -
with Toyoda and Rastaman. Dork sessions in Dallas are the rage.
The Blue ramp takes the brunt of the abuse. NSA invites the
world's best to Huntington Beach for a prolam skate-off.
Motorhead is still a driving force from the blast box. Mark
