SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME
SKATEBOARDING
CHRIS MILLER -half feet of vert I'd give it a foot-and- brother was taking pictures of me
(From page e) or I'm a skateboarder
and I get all this money handed to
me for doing nothing, and so I don't
understand how the world works
How do you deal with skate
harassment?
If I was skating a parking lot or
something and somebody was has
sling me, fused to get pissed off and
maybe harass them back. Now try
and explain it, try and get to their
level somehow Like the security guy
this wannabe authoritanan. I used to
be really sarcastic with them, but now
I just try and point out that what I'm
doing is harmless. Or if they told me,
to leave dust avoid a hassle
would be bummed out by but
a-half of vert. I picture going very,
very fast, doing high airs and skating
smooth. Riding backwards, chang
ing directions, being able to carve
backwards and do airs backwards
and blaze high speed, smooth, fast.
Fast fast, fast. It would be rad to have
a gnarly, vertical structure that also
sloped downhill, like the way
Lakewood's half-pipe was. You start
at the top and get speed going down.
faster and faster. I would like to skate
very fast, with an economy of motion.
not a lot of arms moving around. I
would like to be able to skate as well
gooly footed as I can regular footed.
would like to do different kinds of
540 airs, a lot of different lip tricks
wand change directions a lot while
moving very fast. The flat bottom is
doing frontside airs in the square and
I landed flat on my nose and broke
it. The first contest I was ever going
to enter I did a frontside cess-slide
and slammed-broken wrist. I went.
Oh, my wrist hurts' then, when I
went to pick up my board and saw
what my wrist looked like, I flipped
out. Another time, I plowed into the
transitions, dislocated my shoulder,
screwed up some ligaments and
chipped my teeth. I hung up on an
invention the hip and broke my elbow
right before I was going to turn pro.
One time I did a tail tap in the square
and I slid head-first down the wall on
my helmet without my hands
touching. I didn't even get hurt-I did
a knee slide but I was on my head
instead. Then I got a concussion in
the square from a backside corner
air in one contest. All kinds of hip-
pers. I had this one line where I
carved through the corner of the
shallow end and did a 50/50. I'd try
to do acid drops out of the 50/50 into
the square and one time my trucks.
stuck and I dove into the square and
landed on my hip at the very bottom
of the pool. So anyway. I used to slam
a lot. I was over-amped. My attitude
then was just like, "I don't care if I

would hopefully restrain myself from
saying anything. Instead I would usevold, and utilizing that space adds

amount of respect would respect
them to a point until they abuse the
rights or me would be respectful
and I would be polite, and then I
would probably just leave if you
demonstrate respect for people,
usually they'll respect you. If they
don't then it's their fault, and you can
just know that and be satisfied with
that. They're the ones who are idiots
and not you.
No matter what, I give people a
certain amount of respect for just
being people. I respect life. I respect
a lot of people regardless of whether
they're good skaters, or good at
anything. It's hard, but I try to respect
people until they demonstrate a
reason for me not to. You should
respect people.
Who are some of your favorite up
and coming amateurs?
There are a lot of good skaters.
Brian Pennington, Danny Way, My
friend Eric Jueden is really good, but
he skates different than those guys.
He skates powerfully, and I don't
know if he does as many tricks as
those guys. I like powerful and
aggressive skateboarding. David
Neilson's really good. There are a
bunch of kids at Mike McGill's skate-
park who rip hard, especially the little
ramp. And there's another guy, Mike,
who rides for Santa Cruz. He does
really high takie airs. His skating.
reminds me of Jason Jessee.
When you close your eyes and
think about the ultimate skate-
boarding, what do you see?
Skating something with a variety
of shapes. It would be something like
Upland's combi-pool, where you
actually hit a different type of terrain
each time you hit a different wall. I
would make it more mellow than
Upland's pool. Instead of eight-foot
transitions I would give it ten-foot
transitions, and instead of three-and-

another dimension to vert skating. I
want to do slides on the bottom of the
amp as well as on the lip-180° and
360 directional changes without
losing speed. It's hard, you have to
be able to do that slide really quick
and really efficiently. You have to be
light on your feet, otherwise you lose
all your speed and you can't make
it up the other wall.
The first places ever were Saint
Monicus school and Roosevelt
school, two schools by my house in
Santa Monica. They were just big ce
ment areas There was nothing great
about them but it was fun. Pomona
Grand Prix was the ultimate play-
ground. From there. Upland Skate
park, pipes. And when they built the
combi-pool that was the greatest

frontside thrusters as high as you
could go, skimming your hand along;
the wall, going very, very fast, finally
coming out on the flatwall, doing a
cess-slide and coming down. The
public snake run in Vancouver was
rad love places that allow you to
generate that much speed and just
go wild.
We went there at six in the morn-
ing to skate it one more time before
we caught our plane. All these leaves
and stuff had blown into the bowl. I
started skating it. did an air, slid out
in the leaves and slammed with no
pads. It hurt really bad and I got out
of the bowl and threw my board really
far. It helicoptered into the river,
landed flat on the deck, floated down-
stream a little, then just sunk. That
was the end of that it's in the river
bottoch unless some kid dove in and
got it
My life has been marked by
various goarly slams When I was
learning wheelers in the 15-foot bowl
I went face first into the transition and

way safer now than it was back then.
Just think about the pads that kids.
wear now, and the fact that half-pipe
walls are wood, which gives a little
bit. Mainly, the padding is so good
now versus then
What are your other interests?
Tlike to surf. I like to paint and draw
I like to read occasionally like to
write short poems and short stories
Right now I'm taking a zoology class
about marine mammals like that
but I never knew I liked it until I took
this class. What first got me inter
ested was that there is this beach
down in Del Mar and every evening
without fail, the dolphins are there (at
least every time I've been there) You
paddle out to go surfing and the
dolphins swim all around you. They
jump out of the waves and look like
their playing They're not afraid of
humans. They get sa close you can
swim underwater, open your eyes
and see them go by. In this class I
get to learn about dolphins and
whales. It's pretty cool so far.
Who are your favorite authors.
John Steinbeck is one. In "The
Winter of Our Discontent he subtly
describes life, like stapping outside
and noticing the weather in the same
way I might perceive it That's why
really like his writingdur relate
to it

his people at all. His tribe was slowly
diminished until there were only four
people left. Then, these white guys
who were working on a railroad saw
them and ended up killing three of
them, except for Ishi. For four years
he wandered around in the hills of
northern California until finally, in
1911, after his food sources had been
depleted, he wandered onto this farm
and they picked him up. They throw
him in jail. Nobody spoke his lan-
guage, he couldn't communicate
with anybody. Finally some historian
from Berkeley figured out who and
where he was from, what tribe. He
knew somebody who spoke a
language that was similar, that guy
communicated with him and they
learned his story and his reactions.
The book talks about his society and
what they did. They were rad people,
as nearly as I can tell from this book.
Ishi is on my new graphic, I drew
him. It says "Important" and it says
Ishi very subtly, because it really is
important There was somebody liv-
ing a mellow existence-kind of the
ultimate hippies or something. They
talked about their ideas and images
of what their god was, and nature.
They talked about their lifestyle, and
how men and women related to each
other. In their tribe men and women
were equal. They had different roles,
but neither was considered more or
less than the other. They héd a com-
plex language, which supposedly
shows that they were really intelli
gent, too, even though they weren't
technological. Then again, how,
many of us are really technological?
A lot of us can drive a car, but very
few of us could ever build one, that's
for sure. Sometimes I think that a
simple life would be a lot better than
this life of bullshit-laxes, politics.
world wars. But it's pretty unrealistic.
'm here, so what can I do?
What do you want to do?
I want to mate with my wife and make
a little kid, go cruise around, pick.
