DECLARATION OF SPIN
DEPENDENCE
Skateboarding has always lived
on the edge of public tolerance. Ever
since its emergence as a surf alter-
native, the sport has petrified sla-
lomed pedestrians, aggravated law
enforcers and driven many city
councils to extreme anger, causing
them to outlaw skateboarding in
most places. But why? Skateboard-
ing is an activity that many of us
have found to be inspiring, fulfilling.
enjoyable and worthwhile. There's
a certain feeling associated with
skating that is unequalled anywhere
and in any way. That's what makes
it so addictive. What may have
started as an occasional roll around
the block soon turned into a daily
quest for a grindable curb
or smooth embankment.
We are now skaters who
live it as a daily quest for
action and happiness. We
are all people who at one
time enjoyed skating as a
hobby but we are now
skaters who live it as a
lifestyle. Unlike a drug, we
feel it in our blood. It is
part of our body. Com-
prehending this indivisible
association between our boards and
ourselves must be extremely dif-
ficult, probably impossible for
anyone who doesn't share the feel-
ing. Therefore, skating is still con-
sidered a game that hyperactive
youths and young adults engage in
during their adolescent years just
like G.I. Joe or little league. Most
people don't perceive skating as we
do. But how can they? They're not
skaters. The public's inability to
understand our motivation is the root
of all its measures to control, ban or
somehow eradicate skating. Unde-
niably, they have special reasons to
be skeptical. Skating is an aggres-
sive sport. The abuse taken by many
curbs, pools, walls, half-pipes and
quarter-pipes proves this. By outlaw-
ing skating, especially places that
are heavily sessioned, they are
creating outlaws. So the more.
places they outlaw the more new
places we will find and thrash until
they kick us out of our territory. No
matter what some signs say about
skating or what any police officer
tells us, or how many times they tell
us to leave, we will always be there
and we will always come back to
those places. Most of all there will
be skaters to come for generations,
and they will learn new tricks. We
are survivors; that's been proven.
New generations are always on the
prowl and backyard pools and
ramps will always be found.
Legislatures must some day realize
that unlike Hoola Hoop, they can't
just take away our boards, and we
won't grow out of them with the com-
ing of a new fad or old age. To us,
that seems obvious, but after 25,
almost 26 years, our way of life is stil
largely persecuted. Skating is not
just something we do, it's what we
are. It's that simple!

I wonder if cops have a mag that

Well, kind of. It's called the criminal

YOU NAME IT
Every skater knows that makin'
up original moves is rad. Everyone's
got their own little trick that sets
them apart from the rest of the
crowd, but it's not complete unless
it's got a cool name to accompany
it. Surely the "frigid air" is a cool
name, but here are a few more that
nood to have moves put to them:
Industrial Plant-a heavy duty
move for steel-plated ramps with
smokestacks.
Axe to Grind-when you've got a
chip on your shoulder or you're
listening to Metallica.
Mohammed Ollie-floatin' like a
butterfly, thrashin' like a bee.
Doubled Air-you and your twin
hit the lip at the same time.
Ollie Baba-a real sheik move;
open sesame!
Fredest Air-takes some real
fancy footwork. Kruger and Ginger.
Ollie North the perfect thing for
some heavy "shredding."
And finally, when you wipe out on
