Leviathan, which stars Peter Weller,
Amanda Pays, Richard Crenna, Lisa
Eilbacher, Daniel Stern, Ernie Hud-
son and Hector Elizondo, touches.
down on a group of futuristic under-
water miners who discover a sub-
marine full of dead people. They
return to their own digs with a
souvenir, a bottle of mysterious
bocze. Before you can say "Aliens,"
monsters, mutant genetics and ma-
jor special effects spill off the screen.
Directing the proceedings is
George Cosmatos. Handling the
monsters and goop are Stan Win-
ston, Nick Allder and Barry Nolan.
"Calling this film an underwater
Alien would seem to be the easy tag,"
declares female star Pays. "But I
tend to think this him is more along
the lines of Das Boot meets Alien.
The film is oppressive and claus-
trophobic and deals with human in-
teraction as well as monsters. The
characters are not simply walking
around with signs around their necks
saying rip me to shreds. There's a
whole lot more going on."
NUKED NUNS ON WHEELS
Sleep, young skatefiend Per-
chance to dream. Of nuns in bikini
habits who ride skateboards through
a nuked-out landscape. Behold
cosmic foxes dispatching favors and
bad guys with slashing steel. Enough
dreaming for you?
Somewhere along the psychic
highway filmmaker Donald Jackson
has plugged into this form of noctur-
nal emission and turned the Mad
Mary kinko blueprint into a thriving
cottage industry flying the flag of
Roller Blade.
"Where did I get the idea for these
films?" asks Jackson, a Michigan
native whose hits are Hell Comes To
Frog Town and /Like To Hurt People.
"I wanted to make a movie that
was different from anything that was
in the theaters or video stores. The
idea of an all-female society of
futuristic rebel nuns fighting a post
holocaust war on rollerskates and
skateboards seemed original."
And to date pretty profitable. The
Mad Max crowd has made Roler
Blade: The Video (available on New
World Video) an underground hit.
The premise of this four-wheeled
debut, which features the talents of
Katina Gardner and Suzanne Solari,
follows the rise of a post-nuke female
religious order who do battle with a
male chauv oink oink over a magic
power crystal. The flick features a lot
of skate and sword action, lots of
nubile flesh.
Jackson got the urge to merge film
and skating early in 1984. Armed with
a gift of 4,000 feet of 35mm film,
some skating actresses (or in many
cases, skaters would could margin-
ally act) and some free weekends,
Jackson hit the bricks.
"Originally Roller Blade was going
to be a slasher movie," admits
Jackson. "We were going to have
this insane girl on skatos skating.

killing people with a straight razor.
One day, after a day of shooting
some action sequences, my assis
tant director and I drove by an ancient
looking church. That's when it hit me.
Instead of being a slasher film, why
not a nun on rollerskates who is using
her weapons to fight evil?"
Jackson recently wrapped part two
of this skate key odyssey, Roller Blade
Warriors: Taken By Force. Jackson
describes this punch up as "being
more like a spaghetti western than
the first." This feature, starring Ab-
by Dalton, her daughter Kathleen
Kinmont. Leslie Marcuecella,
Suzanne Solari and Elizabeth Kaitan,
has these babes no-dude-in-his-
right-mind-would-consider-coming-
on-to on a mission to rescue a kid-
napped psychic who is on the verge
of becoming puppy chow to a
bargain basement man-in-a-mon-
ster-suit. Taken By Force contains the
requisite violence, skin and, accor
ding to Jackson, some fifty skate-
related death-defying feats.
Never let it be said that Jackson
isn't above squeezing blood out of a
turnip. The sweat was hardly wiped
off his camera lens when just about
anybody who emptied an ashtray on
the first two Roller Blades was back
on the streets cutting up once again
in Roller Blade 3 Skate From Hell.
Jackson stopped short of giving away
the storyline, but he did hint that the
film will contain skateboard action
sequences up the wazoo.
Yeah, great, Don, but what about
the muse, the majesty? Make like Or
son Wells and discourse on the
nuances and subiteties.
"This definitely isn't Citizen Kane,"
laughs Jackson. "But these movies
are good solid action entertainment.
And a hell of a lot of fun to make."
