I received two new Life's A Beach
series skate decks, the large Monty
Nolder and the Jeff Phillips streat.
While some companies (Vision for
example) made skate parts first, then
went into the clothing business, Life's
A Beach started out as a clothing
manufacturer and has since decided
to make skate decke. In doing this,
it seems that they are trying to tell
you what to ride as well as what to
wear. This is just fine if you care
about the fashion statement you
make as a skater Both companies
make quality skate parts, but they
also bombard us with the the
Madison Avenue skate look. Don't
get me wrong; I'm sure these boards
will be popular regardless of the
clothes you wear
The Nolder is a pretty standard
shape, wider at the front foot and
smaller at the tail area. Both the
Nolder and the Phillips have deep
concave and mega upturned noses
(very similar to Schmitt Stix) but still
no tri-tail. The numbers on the Monty
are 30" by 10%", with 4% of nose
and a 64 tail. Its length makes it
a good board for either street or vert.
A hint on applying grip tape to super
concave decks: Don't do it all in one
piece, because it may pinch or bind.

When I test complete boards. I
always ask myself, "Would I ride
this?" This month, while the com-
ponents all have their strengths and
weaknesses, I would find it hard to
keep this set up for every day skating
The street Phillips is a top notch
board, but it's not my cup of tea. That
doesn't mean it's not for you. It is 30
by 9% with 4% of nose, and 61"
tail and it's 8" wide at the snap

The main reason I would not skate
this rig daily is the trucks-Rannal
Hi Tochs. Those trucks have fancy
alloys which make them strong and
light, but they don't seem to have the
same turning radius that I'm ac
customed to. Fred Rannall has been
making rollerskate trucks since the
sixties and he claims that his pro-
ducts are the lightest all-metal trucks
on the market. Design-wise, the
kingpin is more straight up and down
and that makes the trucks feel less
maneuverable Rannallis are made
in the U.S.A., so they are a step up
from the imported trash that floods
the toy store market, but they have
a ways to go before I give my thumbs
up. They make many colors but only
one size (169) and they come with
good bushings. Rannalli also makes
a high tech bearing press that looks
like a great item for you shop owners
and workers. How many times have
you been frustrated when putting
bearings into hard wheels? This pro-
duct solves that problem and saves

Gyro made excellent aluminum
hub whenis ten years ago, but they
were another product that got swept
under the carpet. Hubs make a
wheel flex less. When you cut the
flex, you cut the friction. When you
cut the friction you increase the
speed, and we all want to go faster,
right? Schmitt Stix Radial Hubs are
63mm tall by 36mm wide. The cor-
ners have a ¼-inch radius and the
nding surface is lathed smooth. The
main difference between these and
any other wheels is the hub. It is
designed so the space between your
bearings is smaller This necessitates
shorter spacers, which are provided
(along with extra spacers between
the truck and the bearings). Paul
says the hub is smaller to keep the
weight down Leave it to Schmitt to
redesign the wheel. He's even
measuring them on a different (sup-
posedly the true) urethane scale.
Those are designated a 500 or 95A
When you slide on these, they emit
sort of a hiss or a zzzip instead of that
loud bark skaters are so proud of.
They are definitely worth a try. Vision

My old buddy Herb Newmann,
father of Skate Werks, sent me some
amazing risers and rails. The rails
come in two shapes, square and
triangular. They slide well and don't
wear out too fast. His risers are not
as tall as the average (½"),
but they will give you ade-
quate clearance with most
small wheels. Herb says that
he set up a deal with a new
distributor, so don't be sur-
prised if you start seeing.

Braza Sk8s, the Brazilian
board manufacturer, sent
some decks. These boards
are made of mahogany, ivory,
imbuia and goiabao, which
are some of the strongest,
most expensive woods in the
world. They enclosed a pic-
ture of a 4x4 truck going over
one of the boards with not
snappage or flexage. The
concave is deep and the up
turned nose is good for nose tricks
and going up curbs. The board
measures 30% by 10" with 3% of
nose and a 20 degree (steep) 9" tail.
This is the first shipment of skate stuff
from Brazil (where they have their
own mage and pros). Technically,
these boards aren't quite as good as
their American competitors.The

In February I wrote that the Vision
Gonz didn't have the super upturned
nose. I have since seen the new
board and it does. They must have
sent me the wrong one by mistake.
