DREAM A LITTLE DREAM he received a
by Brian Brannon
Someone once said "Follow your dream."
Chad Camilleri did and it dragged him
across America, from Capitol Hill in
Washington, DC, to the Santa Monica Pier
in California. He rode the length of the nation
on a skate.
Support Potential Athletes Now (SPAN) is
the flag Chad waved as he rolled over hill and
dale. He hopes to establish a non-profit organ-
ization to help underpriviledged athletes train.
A longboard was his favored mode of mobili
ty, but he had two or three cues in his quiver
at all times. It was not unusual for him to hit
35 mph, and he saw 50 mph once or twice.
A stable longboard was the logical choice.
Cruising across interstates and thorough-
fares, Chad saw first-hand the bigotry of most
lawmen toward skaters. Still, he does not decry
them all.
The bad cops forced him down other routes,
told him he needed permits, quoted regula-
tions, and threatened citations. But like any
other skater, Chad nodded politely, then roll-
ed on as soon as they moved out.
The good ones stopped, gave him advice.

true rarity for any
skater-a police es-
cort through town. In many
cities, it wasn't a long ride.
"Some of the towns I've been to, it's two an unseen pothole grabbed his wheels and
pushes and you're through," he said.
Chad endured shouts, spit and firecrackers
from passing motorists, but rather than let
discouragement win, he forged ahead. Other
travellers smilled, waved and flashed peace
signs. Some even donated money.
Chad said the best cruises of his journey
were found in West Virginia, along mountain
grades and passes.
"The climbs are intense, but the back sides
are incredible and the land is green," he says.
On any given day, Chad began about ten
o'clock, following a full and hearty breakfast.
He would skate for six to seven hours and leave
forty or fifty miles behind him each day.
His newlywed bride, Shauna, and his loyal
Labrador, Chelsie, drove behind. This seven
teen week adventure was Chad and Shauna's
honeymoon. Shauna said she didn't mind it,
even though was wasn't exactly sun and mai-
tais in Tahiti.
Just west of Madison, Indiana, on Sate Road
56, while Chad was coasting down a long hill,
David Hackett, K.T.,
Johnny Ray, Owen
Neider, Todd Swank
and more showed up
to slip and slide.

threw him through the air. The ensuing tum-
ble broke his left wrist in three places and
confined him to a hospital bed for two days.
When he was released, Chad was ready to
pop a tall ollie over that same wretched pit,
but someone had already filled it in.
With a Walkman perpetually at his ears,
Chad enjoyed local radio and songs like
"Oooohh, she's like a smooth stretch of
highway."
When he's not skating the length of America,
Chad takes it to the slopes as a freestyle snow
ski aerialist. Also a professional stuntman,
Chad is featured in a new film called "No Guts,
No Glory." In one scene, he takes a nine-story
alpine acid drop into a rush of deep, soft.
powder.
It was an overcast California afternoon when
Chad shot down a small hill and into the park-
ing lot at Santa Monica Pier. Only a small group.
of friends and relatives were there to greet him,
but the reception was strong and sincere.
With so much behind him, nothing could
hide the triumphant smile Chad wore from his
coast-to-coast accomplishment.
Already, he was prepared to do more.
"I's keep pushing until I raise the money...
across Canada, or around the world."
