LATEST WORD
Sluggo (Steve Douglas) is recuperating
in his downtown San Jose digs after under-
going arthroscopic surgery. Word has it the
doc gave him a video tape of the whole event,
showing little vacuum jaws eating away at
cartilage and tissue and featuring commen-
tary by the conscious Slugman during the
operation. Will this be included in the new
Schmitt video, which premieres at the
amateur finals in Phoenix?
Shut Up and Skate Houston style..
Hmmm.. 40'x11' ramp. The am event went
all time with Danny Way defecting to H-Street
and 1st place. Back to back McTwists put
David Nielsen on a lot of pros' minds. Tex
Gibson skated to 15th place in the pro event
with a broken arm and later required "a little
wrist surgery"
In an unrelated tragic incident Phread
Conrad was seriously injured after he and
his friend were robbed at gunpoint. He was,
shot in the heart. Let's wish him the speed-
lest of recoveries.
the month is undoubtedly the esoteric Ja-
karta, Indonesia, promotional event. Rumor
has Lee Cole of Skates that Haight involved
as well as an ever lovely female tour guide
recently returned from Tahiti. Names tossed
about include Cooksie, Park, Grabke,
Raggety, Gutierrez, Groholski, Nicky Guer-
rero, Mountain, Cab and Fillion. Talk has
it that a mysterious island magnate is footing
the bill and constructing an auditorium, a
ramp and a hotel complex all for the skaters,
all in the spirit of world peace.
MEDIA WATCH AND OTHER HORROR
STORIES
Congratulations to Tommy Guerrero for
somehow placing his board model on the
much-coveted cover of Spy magazine. British
TV wench Tracy Ullman's one-wheeler in
front of the Hollywood sign is simply beyond
belief. (Is it true Blackhart is an undercover
Spy writer?) Ms. Ullman's aggro jewelry was,
according to rumor, provided by one Keith
Cochrane. B.K. probably knows for certain,
but even ever-talkative types like Big Ed are
keeping silent on this one. PS. The Spy cover
was titled "Lifestyle Hell."
Mike Archimedes aka Arco is probably
the most talked about skater of the month.
His drawn-out backside slurred curb slappies
are the hot street move..
Congrats to Mark Richards on the
opening of his newest store. V-Surf held a
mega-demo/party on opening day. A few in
attendance included Taters, Ganzer, Hosoi,
Mr. Ivan, Dave Dominy, "Leado-Bob", Kit-
tila, Jim Gray, Lester Kasai, Lance Moun-
tain, Tommy Guerrero, Mr. Nick, Welinder,
and on and on. The Bones Brigade portable
ramp opened and closed on command. Party
goer Todd Hastings just escaped from being
rousted at gunpoint for a crime some other
guy committed. (The cops apologized when
they realized it was not only the wrong car
and the wrong guy, but the wrong state.)
Sinjin Smith, the Sorrento skater turned
volleyball star, signed audience autographs.
Everyone was amazed when Jim "Brain-
storm" Gray took an injured comrade to the

several hundred folks shouted and pointed
at the hospital across the street from the
demo. Gray never heard them and never
stopped.) Mark Richards is to be congrat
ulated for a well run demo and in particular
for having the balls to continue to hold events
following last year's Northridge (police over-
reaction) fiasco.
Word has it that Morris Wainwright has
been looking good down on the Farm Ramp.
TOPSY TURVY
That wholesome maker of cards for kids,
The Topps Company, Inc., has done it again.
Their latest line of trading cards and stickers,
called Dinosaurs Attack, tells a story of
dinosaurs spiralling through time and wreak-
ing havoc on the human race. The gory
graphics have allegedly caused such an
uproar with parents and retailers that they
were pulled from the market shortly after the
first shipment was uncrated. Either that, or
Topps has chickened out and decided not to
ship them for financial reasons. West Coast
retailers can't get them, as hard as they try.
A call to Topps headquarters was answered
with a "No comment." But the kids love 'em
and collectors are already hoarding them, so
buy a box if you get the chance. Check the
samples for a look-see. We like the Tyran-
nosaurus Rex munching the skater.
