GLEAMING THE CUBE
(From page 91)
skateboarders. "Dealing with non-actors is
always a problem," chuckles Clifford. "Film
making requires that you do things over and
over and hit the same marks every time. The
skaters weren't used to that, and their impa-
tience with the process often led to their get-
ting out of line. As a group they were extreme-
ly difficult to handle. But I adjusted my
shooting to accommodate their inexperience
and, when dealing with them one on one or
in small groups, I found them to be extremely
professional."
Gleaming The Cube contains plenty of
skateboard action. Some of it is as simple
as riding down the street and some, of
skateboarders at play, is more ambitious.
"The skateboarding sequences were a
real mixture," confides Clifford. "Stacy and
I worked great together in that area. I would
suggest what I needed cinematically for a
particular scene and he would say, 'Yes, you
can do that,' or 'No, you can't.""
The skate action in Gleaming The Cube is
all pretty realistic. Still, Clifford has to choke
back a laugh as he admits that the film's
climactic chase sequence leaves skateboard
reality behind in favor of Hollywood-style
action.
"The chase sequence gets real fantastic.
It takes place on a freeway with Brian hang-
ing onto a car on a skateboard going 70 miles
per hour. Brian lets go of the car, skates under
and through an 18-wheel truck, climbs a
ramp and launches through the air onto
another adjoining freeway. Quite frankly, it's
an impossibility for real skateboarders, but
I hope that doesn't get in the way of audi-
ences enjoying the sequence for the fantasy
that it is."
Clifford, in hindsight, says that logistically
Gleaming The Cube was "unbelievably
difficult."
"It seemed like every day we were in a dif-
ferent part of town. Because of all the loca
tions, the movie has a definite non-stop, mov-
ing quality that I think people will appreciate.
I'm also pretty sure Gleaming The Cube will
have a more widespread audience than
skateboard movies have had to date. Sure,
guys will like the skateboarding sequences,
but I believe girls and even young adults will
be attracted to the relationships. This isn't
another horny teenage sex film."
Clifford hopes Gleaming The Cube is a box
office success but concludes by saying it
would be just as much of a victory if the film
did nothing more than show skateboarding
in a more realistic light.
"I don't know if Gleaming the Cube is the
movie that will legitimize skateboarding. But
it will show people what skateboarding is all
about. It is not about a bunch of riffraff kids
tearing up the city and terrorizing old ladies.
Skateboarding is a very real art form that re-
quires some very real discipline."
SKATE VIDEOS
Nowadays, the market is flooded with
skate videos, making it tough to decide
which one to lay down your hard-earned
ducats on. Well, here are three new vids
that cover all facets of skating.
SKT HARD by Christian Hosoi Enterprises
is an hour of raw footage shot by Pops Hosoi
and others on an endless road trip hot on the
heels of Christian as he terrorizes endless
skate spots in endless locations (Hawaii,
California, Virginia Beach and selected loca-
tions in South America). We get to watch.
tough sessions with the locals at Baldy
Pipeline and Wallos, late night parking
garage assaults at MCO and unforgettable
bruising action at the Venice Breakwater. A
million airs, a thousand grinds, a hundred.
demos and assorted expression sessions are
all spontaneously captured here. The added
effect of "Super Inserts" (a mini picture in
the lower corner of the screen) gives you
twice the visuals, but also blocks the action
at times. SKT HARD captures the rigorous
life of one of the world's top professionals.
It's a nice video scrapbook.
ALVA BOYZ BACKYARD ANNIHILA-
TION by Kiki Productions is everything it
claims to be: explosive "behind the fence"
pool assaults with the hardcore pool elite of
Team Alva. These are guys who've cut their
teeth on death boxes, coping, hips and kinks.
Each rider is isolated in a psychedelically col-
orful profile. This is 37 minutes of what balls-
out havoc skating really looks like-speed
lines drawn from instinct and experience.
See the masters at work as they rip coping
crushing thrusters, micro-edged wheelers,
drawn-out double grind facewall carves,
death box attacks, hip action and shallow end
savvy. This vid is a testament to backyard rip-
ping. Blood, sweat and no fear. The vertical
never ends.
PUBLIC DOMAIN by Powell-Peralta Corp-
oration is a thrilling high-speed roller coaster
ride that doesn't let up for an instant. From
start to finish, Domain is crammed with
enough ultra-excitement to inspire a revolu-
tion. If you fancied yourself well-versed in the
state of the art, well, think again. This video
redefines skateboarding with a jackhammer.
There's streetstyle footage that simply
obliterates all preconceived notions of reality,
halfpipe footage that's coma-inducing and
vintage first generation skateboard footage
for reminiscing and learning. There's also a
segment which focuses on female shredders
who tear it up on vert, banks and flatland.
A 63-minute continuous flow of creative
energy, Public Domain leaves you asking
yourself, "Where do we go from here?"
There you have it, three great skate videos.
Each one is different from the next, yet all
possess an abundance of skate visuals, mak-
ing them excellent reference materials for a
proper skate education.
