I follow Mark and a production assistant
into the production studio to record some
station id.'s. Mark records about ten short
segments in ten different mutated voices. We
prepare to leave as the DJ squeezes in a
couple final schmoozes. Our driver is a boy
toy, modern rocker/Devo devotee with a bolo
tie and a nifty suit. Mark is craving soup.
Do you still do stuff with Peewee Herman?
(Suspiciously) What do you mean by that?
Pause
(Bert) What about your art? I
have one of your pieces.
What have you got?
That thing you did called
Thirty-Six.
Oh, yeah. There were thirty-six.
artists and we had to give thirty-
six pieces of art, 11x17. Mine was
a hillbilly snoozing while two kids
played ring toss with his erect
member.
It was the same thing in all of
them?
Yeah, thirty-six of them exist.
You've had showings right?
Oh yeah. I've done a number
of shows in Tokyo and all over the
world. I've got a gallery in New
York and a Gallery in Los Angeles.
There's Tommy's Joynt.
Okay, Tommy's. Sounds great.
admit it or not. We're not beating people over
the head with anything. When it comes to
Democrats and Republicans, at this point in
time, there's not much of a difference. You
don't really have a choice. It's like heavy
metal bands. They have different outfits and
different names, but it's the same thing.
We're trying to help people understand that
it's not nuclear bombs you must fear, but the
human mind, or lack of it, on this planet.
Why did you stop working with Warner
Brothers?
We were trying to find a situation where
we'd have a record company that took us as
seriously as we did. On our last tour, the "Oh
No, It's Devo' tour in '83 and '84, we'd get
to cities that had sold out shows and we'd
What about video?
We were pioneers, but like many pioneers
we got scalped.
What do you think about current MTV
assembly line video? Maybe I shouldn't
bring it up while you're eating.
When MTV needed us, they were big sup-
porters of our band. When it got to where they
didn't need us anymore, when there was a
flood of bands doing videos, they just forgot
about Devo. Now it's pretty rare to see our
videos. It's de-evolution in action. It started
at a higher point and devolved
How is the new record doing?
I don't know. I'm afraid to ask.
(Bolo-tie Guy) You know, I answer phones
at the radio station and we get a lot of
requests for Devo.
Do you ever play us?
Uh...sometimes.
PS
Is there any way we can stop right here and
put the hood up like the car's broken?
What kind of art do you do? How would
you describe it?
My solo things are quite a bit different from
Devo. Purposely so. They're stream of con-
sciousness pieces and real private stuff
whereas Devo is a collective.
What kind of media do you work with?
Mostly pen and ink right now. Drawings
and things.
What was the last thing you did as Devo,
before you signed to Enigma?
We scored some feature films together.
We leave the van and cross the street for
Tommy's Joynt, a junk/nostalgia den and hof
brau. As we reach the door we're accosted
by a vagrant.
(Vagrant) May I ask you something, y'all?
May I ask you something, please? Don't
get mad at me. You're very nice. And he
(points at Bert) takes good pictures.
Please, don't get mad at me. Would you
guys help somebody who only has (counts
his money) twenty-two cents? All I want to
do is eat some food. (Mark gives him
money) I dang sure appreciate it.
We enter Tommy's. The only soup available
is bean and beer, so Mark orders buffalo chill
instead. We repair to a table upstairs to break
bread and buffalo.
Do you feel that your message as a band
is more personal or political?
102
go to six or seven record stores in the
neighborhood of the venue and we couldn't
even find our records. People would leave
after the show and they couldn't buy the
records because they weren't there.
Is Enigma treating you guys well?
We have some of the same problems, but
we're still figuring out how to work best with
them. They do seem earnest. They're trying
to get it together for us.
When you left Warner Brothers in '84, was
there a "breaking up" feeling or did you
plan to keep playing?
Well, we did other projects, both individ-
ually and in groups. For most of the things
we didn't use the name Devo. We did a lot
of independent studies. Bob Casale pro-
duced records for Martini Ranch, and he
engineered for Andy Summers from the
Police. Jerry directed videos for other bands.
I did art gallery shows. I wrote and produced
records for some really weird pop artists in
Japan. I wrote a couple solo albums that are
coming out soon
What motivated you to get back together
and start playing and touring again?
We did seven albums, five world tours and
twenty-two videos in about five and a half
years, then we just said, 'Wait a minute, we
have to take a break.' We thought we were
going to take about a year off for vacation.
Through all the projects everyone was doing.
time just slipped away. It took a while to get
I think all bands are political whether they it all going again.
Mark creates a still-life with all of
his dishes and utensils as Bert
shoots photos.
(Bert) Wow, we broke bread with
Devo. So, what about these
young girls? Fifteen-year-olds?
What about them?
We've heard certain things. You
know, during the Search and
Destroy days. I've been around
for years. I was there.
Well, there are a lot of girls out
there that think they're thirteen.
Is this the original line-up you're
working with?
No, Alan, our original drummer,
became un-brainwashed earlier
this year when we signed with
Enigma. He didn't want to go on tour, so we
looked around and found a guy with a great
medical library. David, the new drummer,
seems pretty Devo. He can keep the beat.
In fact he's very Devo. He's been a fan from
the beginning and he fits in perfectly. Of
course, right before we left for tour, Alan calls
me up and goes, "Well, what are you guys
doing? If you ever need any help, tell me."
What's the average age of the band?
We're all in our early- to mid-fifties.
Will it ever end?
Well, if there was ever no need for us, we
would stop.
Is Devo like a never-ending performance
art piece?
We're like a virus.
Is that what it started out to be?
We were worried guys. We were watching
TV and observing the planet around us and
we knew that something was wrong. We got
along with each other. In Akron, Ohio, this
is pretty phenomenal because nobody gets
along with anybody there.
Have you gone back to Akron recently?
I went back to a 20-year high school
reunion. That was pretty Devo. It made me
realize I wouldn't be alive if I was still there.
Did people know you were in Devo?
Yeah. Now it's like. 'I gotta get your
autograph, Mark. If I don't, my kids'll kill me."
Do you ever have reccuring nightmares?
The worst dreams are when I dream about
reality.
