Mike Taylor had to look at this cornice every day on his way to work at
Boreal until finally he couldn't take it anymore. A brisk uphill hike from the
freeway provided the following result. Photo by John Dettman.
1989
SEASON
when you can bail sick tricks into four feet of soft white flakes? Just like we told you TIMBERLINE CLASSIC
last month-it's time to get up on that steep and go berserk.
Snowboarding is not skating. You can't slap a curb, smack a tail or slam a wall.
You can, pump carves, bash lips and whip inverts, though. Hell, you can even do
nose pickers. Most importantly, you can pursue the ethereal pot of gold at the end
of the velocity rainbow-AIR. Go ahead, boost a blast out onto a packed cotton candy
landing. It's half-pipe-flight adrenalin without the bitter masonite aftertaste.
Although they are often seething elitist pits of bad money and worse attitudes,
ski resorts are some of the few places where you can actually buy freedom; freedom
from endless uphill hiking, of course, but also (think about this, you SINAC heads)
freedom from police harrasment. As long as you don't do flips, run people over or
leave the area boundaries, you can pretty much crush the mush wherever you want.
So what the hell are you still reading this for? Get up there and lay some tracks!
