Hello! My name is Espen An-
dreassen and I live in Norway. Me
and my friends are really happy now
because the people here in Norway
have suddenly understood that
skateboarding is not dangerous and
It's not a crime. Skateboarding isn't
really allowed here in Norway but the
state is going to take it up on a
meeting next year and then maybe
skateboarding will be allowed.

I'm 17 years old and I've come to
the conclusion that no matter where
you are in the world you cannot
escape skate harassment. So to
those of you who are getting pissed
off at the harassors in your town,
don't think of going somewhere else.
Stick to your spot and skate hard. I'd
like to thank Thrasher for an unreal
mag and I'd also like to thank Christ-
ian Hosoi for popping down to S.A
Maybe the skate scene will even-
tually pick up.

I am 13 years old and I love to
skate. I am a champ of the ramp and
I love the bowl but we don't have
many shredders. I love street skating.
I wrote this poem about skating:
My name is Sped
And I love to shred
I am the champ
Of the ramp
Yep, that's right
As soon as I
Get out of bed
I go straight out
And start to shred
And if anyone gives
Me cheek
I will olie to head.

I'm a Indonesian skater living in:
Jakarta. I have no ramp or halfpipe
because there is no place to build
them. I like streetstyle, of course. I'm
a Hosoi fan. I like his style in ramp
or street. Send my regards to Hosoi,
Mark Gonzales, Steve Caballero and
Gator. Those guys are cool! There
are in Bandung (city) many
skateboarders, one park and also a
ramp. And in Jakarta at Velodrome
stadium there house some ramps
and pool for skateboard and BMX.

I'm 10 years-old boy, and I liv' in
Finland. I start to skate in this year,
and I've noticed in u'r mag that thing,
110
that skateboard guys are some kinds
of criminals. Lots of your published
Mail Drops are written in a "f-k you
cops" style. Here in Finland (d'ya
know where it is?) in Helsinki-city, we
build lots of ramps and cops don't
even care of that! Street skating is not
a crime! CRAYONE!

Why do all those flipping people
kick on the skaters? Well, my part-
ners skate all over Trinidad. Also let
me tell the Public something: Skate-
boarding is not a crime. So skaters
keep on skating and hell with the
people who don't like it, maybe they
are just jealous. No Mail Drop, don't
worry about those people who give
you their problems. Why don't they
give their problems to their pet dog
or pet mice or goldfish?

I was skating around in the center
of Oulu one day. When I crossed the
street, the back wheels stopped on
the island and I stumbled forward.
My board went backwards straight
under a quite big van. One of the
front wheels of the van went over the
board in the middle. The board bent
and bent, but didn't break! I just re-
bounded into the air! I was really
amazed and the people who saw that
occurance wondered how the board
can still be whole. My board is call-
ed "Rat Zone" the manufacturer is
unknown. It's concave and made of
five-storied plywood. I just wonder,
how can it be so strong?

I live in a country called Botswana,
in Africa. There is NO skating scene
here. We have a large mall which is
about 90% concrete and the rest is
just dirt. Ideally it's really quite
decent for a skate area, but because
my board is so heavy, I can hardly
make use of the large supply of
shallow drops and good supply of
steps in the mall.
My board is the heaviest, cheapest
most pathetic excuse for a
skateboard on this Earth. I bought it
in South Africa so I really couldn't
have expected much. The lowness
of this board really gets me down but
I try not to let this affect my love of
skating. Every day I try to pop ollies,
but to no avail. Your magazine is the
only thing that keeps me from going
crazy in the place.
I have learnt to adapt to this hell-
hole, though, and fortunately for me
I will be going to England to live in
a few months time. As soon as I get
there I'm going to buy a decent skate
and learn how to rip.

FAIRPLAY
(From page 48)
a skinny ramp where the contestants
made sure their hairdos were in
place before pushing into the foun-
tain. So, that's the jist of the skate
track. All was well and everyone
seemed among friends.
I'm not sure who ordered it, but
before the contest got underway, a
parade complete with a marching
band strolled right around the con
test sight. Willie Brown, that spiffy
dressin' politics guy who helped
organize the whole thing, was the
grand marshall leading the charge.
After locating a choice seat in the
bleachers, I slept through what was
called a riders' meeting. Then I
caught my buddy Pierre riding the
course with the rest of the boarders.
I knew he didn't have the money it
took to enter, but he had the guts to
push around with the rest of the hot-
shots. The next good show was by
some swinger named Dave Hackett.
He had a crew helpin' him out and
they taped a huge canvas down on
the damn ground. Then along came
Dave with a casual chapeau and a
paint palate. He dipped his wheels
in the paint and did spins on the
paper, then he held up the finished
piece for everyone to appreciate. And
so it went for the whole day on
Saturday. Each rider went about it in
their own unique way.
They even had some flatlanders on
hand and held a contest for them too.
They all focused heavily on critical
concentration with special attention
to nit-picking and showmanship. The
top entertainer, The Mutt, even got
VI.P. trenchcoat escort treatment
after his show. He did whatever he
wanted and looked damn happy
about it. Bottle that stuff and he'd be
rich! I tripped out on their kind.
The contest was gonna continue
the next day and the excitement was
rising toward the plan of attack for the
evening. Much to my amusement,
found myself following a whole herd
to a hotel called the Fairmont, some
ritzy joint downtown. There was a
premiere video party goin' down for
the skateboarders on Team Alva.
The cat at the door let me slide,
probably 'cause of my rat's-nest
hairdo which strongly resembled
many of the party-goers. I can't
remember what happened after that,
sorry. Too much secret sauce too
soon. I did manage to acquire the
acceptance of some of the boys, a
spot on the rug and a pole position
for Sunday's proceedings.
When I arrived, I was glad to find
the ramps providing roofs for some
of
my fellow vagrants crafty enough
to remain through the night. The
coming of high noon saw the event
in full tilt again. I was tryin' to wander
around but I didn't have no purple
bracelet so I was heckled endlessly
by security. The crowd had grown
thick around the arena and the
security was slipping. It was time for
the ditch-style finals. It was also time
for MCM and the Monster to take the
stage and dish out the rap 'n' roll-a
simultaneous double whammy!
All right skating, here we go. Eric
Dressen came cookin' down the take
off at speed, always. He performed
a hair-raisin, high-risk routine. Next,
a resident of our city, one T.G., an-
nounced he'd like to thank all his
boys for coming out. He thanked Mr.
Sun, too, 'cause it was a beautiful
day. He thanked his mom, Chuck
Weathertree, Bill the ambulance
driver and Wilma the cook. Blood
hopped a 360° over the Bad Boy
Club ramp, backside oled out, 180°
ollied in, anything.
In fine form, Christ began his
escapades. The crowd was pleased
by the distance of his spins. It was
his business to please, so there you
go. A rather tall skater flew down the
platform in his right mind. Couldn't
tell if he was comin' or goin',
backside, frontside or lipslide. I
remembered the name Hawk 'cause
I had met his dad earlier. It's good
to know the father/son relationship
remains close there. One rider
looked real familiar. Announced as
B.K., I recalled his mannerisms. Yes!
It was him and some other guy who
used to ollie me. Speakin' of ollie,
that's a funny word and an even fun-
nier lookin' trick. Natas ollied the
whole barrier between the pools,
some three feet high. It don't take
much to notice the difficulty there.
What's gotten into these kids
anyway? I'm tellin' ya man, Bill Dan-
forth attacked the place. We saw him
do flips and land unphased. We saw
the wreck-loose antics of Jim Murphy
too. He reminded me of Jeremy, my
old pal who I think went off to
Nebraska on the Green Tortoise Jim
was tough and ready for anything. I
then enjoyed a bit of crazy skatin' by
the happy-go-frenzied Jim Thiebaud.
Even while listening to rap, he
managed to keep his skills on edge.
They say you gotta start somewhere,
but screw that. Bo Ikeda had his first
pro outing here and did more than
his share of progressive skating.
Three other smoothies named
Cab, Oster and Reese also took the
course. I almost forgot them they
were so smooth. Now that I look
back, I remember the fire in their
eyes. I pick Jesse Martinez as my
personal favorite 'cause he got the
most aggro like my homeboys in the
park. I hope they find the strength to
pull it together this weekend like me.
I'd like to thank the builders again.
They made this ditch-style gig hap-
pen. Thanks to the pigeons for not
showing up. Jim Muir was a good
sport for buyin' me a pint at the after
contest party at Zeitgeist. Thanks
Jim, you're all wool and a yard wide.
As for me, I've chosen the new life
of a wheel-head, to live on the edge
and to live on friends. Later!
