PATROL

Whoa, it's January, 1989 and you
know what that means; we're getting
a new president. Whether or not he
had anything to do with it, the skate
industry has rebounded completely
during the Reagan presidency. For
those who remember, in 1981 the
industry seemed like a prize fighter
laking a standing eight count. Parks
were closing, many companies went
belly-up and the people who had
brought it so far were losing faith.
Now the industry is strong and the
kingpins behind it seem to truly care
about skating. Junk products don't
last long because the skaters won't
buy them. Most of the products we
review are an indication that the bad
is behind us and more good things
are to come.
This month I have gone back to the
complete set-up idea. Seeing com-
ponents assembled and rideable
makes reviews more readable.
I received three new Steadham
decks. Steve has had some problems
with concave in the past, but he has
gone to extremes with his new
designs. The larger of these is 32"
by 10.85" with 4.5 of nose and a 75"
tail. These are some heavy measure-
ments with no compromise in
wheelbase (15). The second one is
the Full Street which looks quite
similar to some Alva decks I have
seen, but with a more squared-off
nose and double blunt edges on the
tail. It's 31.25" long. 10" wide, with
a 4" nose and a 6.75" tail.
This month's set-up is the Team
Steadham Mic model, new blue
Thunders (with new 99 durometer
Supercush) and Powell 97 T-Bones.
The board measures in at 10" wide.
30" long, with a 15" wheelbase, 5.5"
of tail and a 3.75" nose. Because of
the short, steep tail, you really have
lo pop this puppy for max ollie
leverage, but the Midi is a compact
responsive deck for street and small
ramp schralping. Steadham decks
have 7-ply construction, super con-
cave, upturned noses and slight tri-
tail. Write to: Team Steadham, 1605
Falcon Hill Ct, Cardiff, CA 92007.
The trucks are new blue Thunders.
The color doesn't mean squat, but
the 99 Supercush are something.
else. They're hard enough to chip a
tooth but stable and flexible in the
danger zone. Thunders are strong
and turn very quickly.
Last month I said Powell Peralta
produced only small wheels. Well,
that blab went out the window when
I checked out the new T-Bones (97
and 95 durometer). What can be said
about Bones wheels that hasn't been
said already? Almost all of the letters
I recieve are from someone who rides
either Bones or Santa Cruz wheels
That should tell you something about
the other brands. The main dif-
ference between the big two is the
durometer scale. I would ride 97
Bones on the street, whereas 97 OJ's
seem a lot rougher on normal pave-
ment. I know some downhillers who
ride 97 Bullets for maximum sliding,
but, as I said before, it's up to the
rider. The shape of the new T-Bone
is tall and thin, the best combination
of height for speed and narrowness
for minimum riding surface. These
wheels have a recessed inner edge
for smooth re-entries. Write to: Powell
Peralta, 501 E. Guitterez St., Santa
Barbara, CA 93103.
Mad Diaz, a company I had never
heard of before, sent me a deck.
called the All Terrain. The graphics
on this stick are definitely eye-
catching. The All-Terrain seems to
have a little of everything rolled into
one concept (tri-tail, deep concave,
double kicktail and extra in the hips).
This is a high-quality first release.
Sure, these boards may have been
manufactured by the same large
parent company that made your
deck, but skater-designed products
always work best. Mad Diaz' cue
measures 31.35" long. 10.85" wide
with a 3.5" nose and a 75" tail. It's
a little on the heavy side, but that's
how it goes. Contact Mad Diaz Tear
Wear, 18694 Fairweather Canyon
Country, CA 91352.
Let's see what is in store for the
masses in my now famous trinket
department. Santa Cruz has flowed
some new Cell Block rails that slide
forever They come complete
with t-bolts (most rails don't).
S.C. also kicked in some new
Rip Grip nose pieces for the
"no flail lion-to-tail" They're pre-
cut for most regular nose shapes
so you just peel 'em off, stick 'em
down and they hold on for life. The
trinket department often has useless
stuff (board racks and sparking
devices), but once in awhile I come
across something that someone real-
ly thought about. The Superkit is one
such product. It's a one-step truck
rejuvenation system. If you have
some old trucks that don't turn, this
package deal is right down your
alley. It contains one kingpin, two
Supercush bushings and as-
sorted rings and washers. That's
what I call using your head. Write
to Supercush, PO. Box 884234.
San Francisco, CA 94188
I have two namedrops this
month. The first is Derek Bur-
ritt of West Hartford, CT who
asked why I said not to ride
Ava/Concrete Jungle decks
in the rain. The answer is
that it voids your warrantee.
Just set up an old deck as
your rain board. Second,
John Witmer of Canton,
OH, wrote to tell me that if
you have problems with
SuperKit
your Supercush being too hard, try
putting them in boiling water for
about a minute. That will make them
softer and more manageable.
Thanks John. Just make sure you
don't boil them for too long or they'll
turn into SuperMush.
Next month: A whole new motley
crew of Vision decks (Gonz, Rose-
crans, Douglas and Simpson), Big
Balls, new Pro Design knee pads and
elbow-pads and Champion stainless
steel bearings. Let me know about
your good and bad experiences with
the equipment I review. Write to: Jake,
co Thrasher, PO Box 884570 San
Francisco, CA 94188-4570. Soo yal
