            SOCIAL DISTORTION
(From page 93)
Do you have any favorite bands
right now?
I like Jason and the Scorchers
a lot. I still like the Ramones and
the Dickies. I like TSOL, they're
good friends of mine. They've
gone through a lot of changes
and a lot of pressures and are still
playing the music they want to
play. We're real close to them.
Back to Seattle, was that a dif-
ferent kind of audience than
you expect to play at most
gigs?
You know, the thing I can relate
to with skaters is aggression. I
wish I had enough balls to get on
that ramp. When I was learning
how to skate, it was pretty much
just skate to the store and doing
little 360's. People were just start-
ing to skate pools back then.
One experience I've had with
all crowds-whether they're
skinheads or longhairs or
anything is that there seems to
only be trouble at the under age
shows where there are a lot of 18
year olds. I remember what it's

like to be 17 or 18. It's a real im-
portant period in a man or
woman's life. I can't speak for the
woman's side, but for the guys,
it's like...you want to be a man.
You don't want to be a kid
anymore. You get pressure from
the bro's to show your machismo
and there are only so many ways
you can do it. You can fuck a lot
of girls, you can drink a lot of
brews, you can stick a needle in
your arm, you can skate and do
big aerials, you can break a guy's
nose, join a gang or whatever. I
did all that stuff. I went to jail, I
went to hospitals, I got in three
fights a night. I drank, I did drugs,
I did everything. It was all part of
growing up.
Do you feel that your musical
perserverance has paid off?
Well, I'm glad we stayed with
it. A lot of bands have either
given up or turned into junkies
or grown their hair out and
become heavy metal bands. I'm
just grateful that we were able to
stay together and not give up
when the times were rough.

BUM RAP
I used to be a well-known and well-
liked kid by my elders. That all
changed about nine months ago
when I began to skate. I have been
harassed at least twice a week,
threatened to have the cops come
pick me up 7 times, threatened with
a GUN, and also had a full can of
Coke thrown at me that hit me in my
face and knocked out four teeth.
What really pisses me off is that the
people at the church I have been go-
ing to all my life have accused me
of worshipping Satan.

SIGN OF THE TIMES
I was walking over to check out the
pizza stand at the Toronto SK8 Fest
88 and my friend Brian comes run-
ning up to me for laughs and yells,
"Oh my God, will you sign my shirt?"
So I thought, "What a geek," and I
signed it. Before I knew what was
happening, all these markers and
shirts were being shoved in my face
and I must have signed at least 30
shoes, shirts, arms, etc. What a
bunch of wanna-be's. They didn't
even know who I was.

I followed the "Plan Your Day"
article in your September issue and
while I was skating I must have lost
my phone money through the hole
the killer dog bit in my hip pouch as
I was breaking into...never mind.
Mom, if you're reading this, come get
me. I am at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.
Look for the house with the built-in
lightning.

I Wish I Knew
5% DAYS OF BOBBY G.
"SKATE" CAMP
DAY 1: I check in and they give me
a room key and a t-shirt. I go outside
to skate the ramps and the 9ft. is not
working and the 12ft. is over vert and
damn near impossible to skate. The
only thing left is the 4ft. which is
cool, but not what I paid $350.00 10
skate.
DAY 2: It's 100 plus degrees 50
skaters can't skate for more than 20
minutes at a time without getting heat
exhaustion. The 9ft. ramp is still out
of commission.
DAY 3: Still 100 plus. The pros that
were supposed to come are bogus
because one can't make it due to an
injury and the other one arrives at
7:00 p.m. and gets drunk with the
counselors. Also, my helmet and
elbow pads get stolen.
DAY 4: Still 100 plus. The 9ft. ramp
is finally fixed. Our wonderful pro is
too hungover to skate until 7:00 p.m.
Our first training session starts at this
time. Bobby G. had told us that we
would have two training sessions
each day starting on day two. We're
having our first training session when
we should be having our sixth and
all the counselors are teaching little
kids how to drop in the whole night.
The more advanced skaters can't
even skate the ramps.
DAY 5: I finally get to skate the
ramps for a day, right? Wrong.
Everybody else that can already drop
in feels the same way as me, so the
ramps are packed and you have to
wait 15 minutes between each run.
DAY 6: It's half a day because I
leave at 12:00. Not much to say about
this day, except that it is the best day
of the week because I get to go home
and finally get some skating in at my
local mall.
