Instead of skating, the trio improvises another
car tour to make the best of the situation. They
visit the Reichstag. It is a very important historic
building that at one time was the seat of the Ger-
man government. It has been almost completely
destroyed, twice.
Next, they drive past the Brandenburger Tor,
which is the victory archway that stands on the
east side of the wall. It was through here that
Hitler's armies paraded with much pomp and cir-
cumstance during his infamous reign as supreme
leader/dictator of Germany.
After the rain lets up, the group makes a bee-
line for the skatepark. A small cadre of young
locals is there, pelting away on a city constructed
quarterpipe. Much to the visiting Americans'
dismay, a small bowl at the end of a snake run is
filled with sand. This is the result of an ill-fated
BMX run, in which serious injury occurred, caus-
ing the authorities to deem the course unsafe.
Eric dazzles the locals with bitchin' ollies and
ball-blasted airs. A very young local keeps asking
Eric about "Das McTwist?"
"Nope."
Weenie pulls out a felt-pen and scrawls out the
words "SKATEBOARD MACHT FREI." All the
locals agree and they attach it to the ramp.
BROWN CHERRIES AND GREY SMILES
It's the last day in Berlin for Eric and Weenie.
Wasdaris has arranged a meeting with some
skaters in East Berlin. After a quick expression ses-
sion on a jump ramp improvised out of a door and
a bike rack, Wasdaris drops Weenie and Eric off
