to fall. Whether you break a bone or not
depends on how you fall. Try to roll out
of it whenever you can. Eventually, with
enough skating, you'll learn how to fall.
If you wear safety gear, the risk of injury
is greatly reduced.

SOFT CORE SCORE
Ray Barbie leaps and bounds over ivy league terrain.
I was wondering why softer wheels take
longer to cone than harder wheels?
Chris Hilde
Palo Cedro, CA
Softer wheels don't slide as much, so
they don't wear out as fast.
ATTA DUDE!
I happen to be one of those people who
just likes to ride his (or her) skateboard down
a hill or around the park or something. Every
time someone who skates sees me on my
board, they immediately ask me stupid
questions like, "How high can you ollie?"
and "Are you a hardcore skater?" I don't
really try to do tricks and stuff, I get my kicks
off just oruising around having fun. I am in
junior high school and the way some of the
people skate, it looks like they're not even
having fun. They just do it 'cause their
friends do it. I like to do unheard of things
that so-called skaters wouldn't be caught.
dead doing like play basketball and collect
baseball cards. I have fun skating and also
doing other things. Is there anything wrong
with us cruisers?
Matt

It's too bad everybody doesn't have the
same attitude you do. If you're havin' fun,
that's all that matters. Just do your own
thing and don't worry about how rad you
can get. Keep on cruisin'!
MOTHER JONES
I have yearned to skate for two years. The
only thing holding me back is my mother.
She is very afraid that I will break bones.
I have repeatedly told her that I will wear
safety gear, but she still says no. My ques-
tion is, what are the chances of breaking
bones with safety gear on and while you are
skating very safely? I wouldn't skate in
dangerous areas or "out of my league."
Stephanie N. Zinggeler
If you're going to skate, you're going
TIE ONE ON
Me and my friend Peter were wondering
about the difference between riding with
your shoes laced to the top or untied. We
are both out of skating for a couple of weeks
due to sprained ankles. When I sprained
mine, my shoe was laced to the top very
tight. It swelled not at the ankle, but a little
above it. We have noticed a sort of trend
of riding untied shoes or low tops for street.
skaters and we're wondering is it safer to
sprain your ankle at the ankle or the topmost
part of the ankle?
Steve Swank
Mission Hills, CA
High tops were originally designed to
provide more ankle support. They do so
when fully laced up. Low tops give no
ankle support. Unless a high top shoe is
laced up all the way, it might as well be
a low top. High tops also offer some
protection from a loose board. If you land
hard enough to tweak your ankle, there's
nothing you can do, but high tops will
offer more protection. You have to decide
for yourself whether to go for it or forgo it.
USE PADS
I've got a suggestion for all you dudes out
there with "Vision Street Wear" shoes. If
your allie pad doesn't protect your shoe
when ollieing, try this: Cut off the ollie pad
from the shoe you don't ollie with and super
glue that baby where it's needed. It'll keep
you from wearing a hole in your shoe. I hope
this helps all you dudes with these
problems
Mike Pavlovich
Flint, MI
Good idea. Put protection where it's
needed.
GRIND IT TO DEATH
Hey Doc, I have a problem. We are using
a bowl for skating, but they are building
houses so we can't skate it anymore. Do you
have any idea what to do?
Eric Pritchard
Newbury Park, CA
Skate it till it dies, then find another
spot.
