I generally review decks more
than any other products. I know they
make up most of the market, but I
would like to do more critiques on
trucks, wheels and other products
involved in skating. So, once again,
I am forced to ask for equipment
along those lines. It seems ridi-
culous to have to ask when this col-
umn is supposed to be a middle
man between the companies and
the skaters. A lot of skaters write to
me and ask about stuff they haven't
seen before. If you live in California,
you can see most of the equipment
at a well stocked skate shop, but if
you live in the middle of Nebraska
the stuff you see will be limited.
Anyway, this month's reviewables
are blanks from two companies that
deserve to be looked at.
The first decks are the new Air-
bourne/Zorlac models: Peanut
Brown vert and street, and the Steve
Schneer mid. The Peanut vert is a
solid 7-ply shape with deep concave
and slight concave tail. It measures
30.75" long by 9.75" wide with 3.5"
of nose and 6.75" of tail. The most
widely asked question in the letters
I receive is "How wide is the board
right before the back truck?" Well,
this one is 8.5", so there.
street shape. It is a little wider than
the vert in the hip area (where they
snap), 8.75"
The Schneer is a mid, which im-
plies that there is one larger and one
smaller, but I don't know if they are
the same shape and dimensions. It
has the same concave and tail as
the Peanut vert, with less nose kick.
It is 29.5" by 9.75" with 3.25" of nose
and 6.25" of tail. This board is only
8.25" wide in the hip area.
While the vert has a strong
uptured nose, the street model has
little upturned nose, which is
puzzling to me. I would think the
street would have more nose-for
curbs and such. At 29.75" long by
9.75" wide with 3" of nose and 6"

of tail, it looks to be a rather generic
These decks are strong with a
very deep front foot concave that
seems to be the most popular ingre-
dient in decks these days. They
deserve a good look because
they're a far cry from the first Air-
bourne decks that came across my
path. Write to Airbourne/Zorfac at

Diego, CA 92126
Also received this month were two
of the new pro decks from Santa
Cruz. While I have heard about the
new Blacktop series, these decks
are made out of solid wood. The new
PEANUT
Jason Jesse is wider in the front and
smaller in the tail aron. The Santa
Cruz concave is one of the most in-
tricately molded concaves on the
market. This slight concave is
deeper in front and then slowly
tapers back to a flat area just before
the rear truck mounts. The front
truck mounting position is angled up
for the slight rocker effect. They
know that the lower your center of
gravity, the more control you will
have over your board. The Jesse is
30.25" long, 10" wide with the basic
3.25" nose, 6.50" tail and what
should be standard 8.75" hip width.
Next is the Corey O'Brien. Like the
Jesse, it is 30.25" by 10" but the
shape is slightly different in that it
has a cutaway tail and rounded cor-
ners to make it a more street
oriented deck. The O'Brien has a
3.50" nose and a 6.5" tail with, you
guessed it, 8.75" in the snap zone.
They are similar, but worthy of in-
dividual examination. Santa Cruz,
4401 Soquel Dr., Soquel, CA 95073.
BROWN
PEANUT
The only trinkets that I received
this month came all the way from
Australia. My old pal Borgy sent me
some of his copers and rails for use
and abuse. The copers are fast and
wear slowly, which is quite different
from most other copers on the
market. They will often fall off your
truck after you abuse them for a
while, but they are worth the price.
The rails are quite a bit different from
any other rails on the market in that
they mount on the deck the same.
but the mounting bolts go back-
wards. The bolts are secured loose-
ly, then you slip the rails on and
tighten to your specifications. The
end result is a strong, slippery rail
with no holes on the bottom to hang
up on whatever you're sliding
across. They are a little on the heavy
side, but they last forever. Take your
pick. Distributed by Hardcore Enter-
prises, 155 Yarra St. Abbotsford, Vic-
toria 3067 Australia. Prospective US
distributors contact Frank at Fax

Lastly, my namedrop goes to Tom
McKinney of Nacogdoches who
wrote to me and asked for a Product
Patrol T-shirt. Well, Tom, there is no
such thing, and very rarely do I go
to THRASHER Headquarters. I write
my column at home and send it in.
Keep those letters coming; they
make my day. In closing, let me
reiterate the fact that I am not Joey
McSqueeb. I am Jake Phelps, and
I have a personality of my own.
Thanks again.
